I’m currently watching the former on DVD and couldn’t help but be struck by the similarities between the start of the film and the Daemons. There’s, effectively, an exclusion zone around Midwich like that around Devil’s End and even the military are present.
The film was made in 1960 so must have been on TV several times when Barry Letts and Robert Sloman were writing their script although they may well have seen it at the cinema.

There are quite a few homages to various other movies & TV shows throughout the classic run of Dr Who, so I doubt that it was a coincidence.
I seem to recall reading somewhere that Nigel Kneale was furious about the opening moments of 'Spearhead From Space' being very similar to the beginning of 'Quatermass II' Other stories greatly mirrored previously used ideas. 'The Abominable Snowmen' closely resembles aspects of the Peter Cushing film of the same name. 'Robot' uses elements from 'King Kong' and 'Planet Of Evil' likewise has certain similarities to 'Forbidden Planet'. On top of it all, Terrance Dicks' inspiration for 'The Brain Of Morbius' is well documented.
Script editors such as Dicks & Holmes were never afraid to 'borrow' ideas if they were good ones!

You’re absolutely correct and I was aware of many, but this was one I hadn’t seen before. TPTV have shown “They came from beyond space” which has, effectively, a Nestene sphere.

Sorry, John, reading back my reply to your first post I realise that it cameover over as very patronising as you obviously know your Dr Who history. Sincere apologies! It's been many long years since I last watched 'Village Of The Damned'. Fascinating to hear of the similarity with 'The Daemons'!

Don’t worry Paul, no offence taken and I’m sure none was intended. I’ve been online long enough to know how difficult it can be to express the nuances and subtleties.
