Hi Ray, I don't think you have tracked down anything that wasn't previously known about. The Wiki is obviously out of date. It might be worth you cross referencing anything you find as a sound recording from an early film with the very comprehensive Vitaphone Project, before you jump the gun and announce it as a find. The records of the recordings you have found are also listed and are well catalogued: www.picking.com/vitaphone-database.htmlIt is highly unlikely that unknown Vitaphone recordings will turn up in a catalogue; most private collectors and archives retaining this material are very open about their holdings and researchers (both online and boots on the ground) have taken a methodical approach in their searches. Of course, if you come across a private collector not previously known about, who has an unknown stash of discs, then I'm sure that the Vitaphone Project will be very happy to know about it! Keep looking, Paul

Keep looking, Paul Thanks, Paul. I expect the Wiki IS out of date, but I'm just signposting here, really. I wasn't aware of the Vitaphone database, so thank you for that. Very occasionally, I've turned up trumps with an old cinema film (For You Alone is the one that sticks out, and one of the cartoons I located yonks ago.), but I have much more success with TV.

Thanks, Paul. I think what we need are links to the obvious places somewhere on the site. These will be useful tools for those interested in the subject and will allow people to cross reference before posting. It's always exciting to track something down, those minutes and hours convinced you've found something unique, then feeling deflated when it turns out to already survive elsewhere. Finding a second copy of something previously thought to be unique is important though. I know of three 16mm prints now of the Steptoe episode 'My Old Man's a Tory'. Each has problems, but the three in concert will one day produce a very tidy restoration, but this is one of those cases where the material is well known about in Vitaphone circles. What say you? A stickied research thread? Paul

I think that's a great idea.
I'm on a project at the moment cross-checking various databases (plus the usual archives and archive search engines) looking for a specific broadcaster's 80's TV holdings.
Without giving too much away here, the reason some programmes may be missing is due to third parties - in this case, independent production companies - either closing, being sold off or transferring their assets elsewhere.
Suffice to say, there are almost certainly missing programmes, and various things have already been found, but I haven't made any major announcements as regards "finds" at this time, as cross-checking is vitally important, obviously.... and the list of shows is very long indeed. It's also a team effort; I'm not doing all the work, but I am tracking copies of programmes down both in archives and, to a lesser extent, on youtube. All the holders of copies of 'missing' programmes are being contacted.
There is a hope that the licence holders will hold more footage than they say they do - I expect this to be the case - but there will, definitely be 'lost' programmes, and some recoveries.
Naturally, I wish that nothing had disappeared in the first place - especially during a decade where the cost of archiving programmes had fallen from the huge sums of previous eras.
