Gutted indeed! A very underrated and highly influential guitarist.

As far as I understand it, he was the only original Animal still in regular touch with Eric Burdon. He must be feeling a long way from Newcastle today.

I saw the original line up in the early 80s at a really small club in Washington DC called The Wax Museum (long gone). They were getting ready to tour in support of their new album (The Ark). Maybe 50 people in the whole place and we were all about 10 feet from the band. They were, simply put, amazing. The energy was astounding. In my top five shows of all time. To this day my memories of that show remain vivid and electrifying. As silly as it may sound, being at that show remains a highlight of my life.
And I still have the ticket stub π

Donβt be. I am sure that you have had similar experiences seeing a band perform that would make me green with envy! The closest I ever got to the UK was a couple of weeks hiking around Ireland almost 40 years ago (although I did first see The Smiths on that trip, albeit on the telly). What I would have given to be there in the 1980s to check out the music! So many great bands Iβd have given my eyeteeth to have seen. Saw more than a few over here on tour but ... not the same as seeing them on their home turf! As it was, living in the Washington DC-Baltimore area in the 80s was great for the small club experience. There were truly dozens and dozens of small joints in and between the two cities (only a 30 minute drive from each other), with cheap tickets and beer. John Cale and Chris Spedding, Lou Reed, Beat Farmers, B.B. King and Bobby Blue Bland (on the same freaking bill!), The Ramones (one show was literally a riot), Peter Tork, Hank Ballard, Clarence Carter, Screaming Blue Messiahs, The Clash, Alex Chilton, The Blind Boys of Alabama, I need to stop.

They give an electric performance in one of the New Musical Express poll winners concerts around 1965 despite the dodgy stage and sound system.

They give an electric performance in one of the New Musical Express poll winners concerts around 1965 despite the dodgy stage and sound system. Taped on 11th April 1965, this must've been one of their last (pre-reunions) performances with Alan Price. Certainly Dave Rowberry was with them by the time they appeared on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' on 30th May 1965.
