ITV have a half hour show in an hour slot which means <50 minutes, maybe 46-48, plus commercials. I’m mystified as to how something like this is being shown on ITV, don’t the BBC hold the copyright?
The BBC don't just magically gain copyright of a show just because they broadcast it!

Copyright has been discussed many times here particularly wrt MEs. If someone has a 16mm print of a ME they own the physical medium but not, afaik, the rights to the material on it.

I asked Auntie about this and the reply just arrived: “Thank you for contacting us about ITV's upcoming broadcast of Morecambe and Wise: The Lost Tapes. Whilst we acknowledge your concerns, we cannot comment on other broadcasters' programming. Upon review, it does appear this broadcast will be a special film dedicated to the work of Morecambe and Wise and lost material associated with their programme. The BBC has previously aired the actual episodes of The Morecambe and Wise Show which were categorised as 'The Lost Tapes' on BBC Two which you can find more information here - www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bx04tl I hope this helps explain matters and I have shared your feedback with senior management teams via our audience feedback report. Thank you again for contacting us.”

But they have no idea. This is an additional show to the ones they mention shown as the lost tapes on the BBC. This is a third discovered episode. The BBC had only documented the other two on that broadcast they mention.

From Film Making magazine, December 1977. Makes you wonder what Ernie Wise had at home...

The BBC had only documented the other two on that broadcast they mention. I did wonder…… OK, let's not all get confused about this. The BBC own the copyright to the actual produced programmes. In the case of Morecambe and Wise, they performed the sketches and brought some of their own work to the party. They were also under contract to the BBC. So, ITV will have to clear the clips with the BBC, but this would be done via the BBC Motion gallery. They did the same with the recent Ronnie Corbett doc. They would also need to clear the writers and the music as well as any other performer/contributor that appears. In addition, ITV would have to pay a substantial fee to the estates of Morecambe and Wise for the material. I suspect that they haven't gone to the trouble of recovering the colour, which is unfortunate. If ITV wanted to re-screen the actual TX'd programme in its entirety, they would have to acquire those rights from the BBC's commercial agency and negotiate with the Morecambe and Wise estates. Paul

I do hope this and the other two recovered episodes get a DVD release. It’s probably the only way I’ll see them in Australia.

If the (a) optical soundtrack isn't very good, they could use the home recorded off air audio. It was made with a line-out and it was used for the previous recoveries as well.

Is this episode 1 from the BBC Sid & Dick series, like the two recentish PM recoveries and the decayed episode or as the blurb says episode 1 of the Eddie Braben scripted run? I wasn’t aware there were any of this run missing. If so, is this the only episode or are others missing too?

The newly discovered episode is Series 4 Episode 6, 08/10/1970. I've been surprised that nobody seems to want to say so explicitly. The ITV press release said it was the first episode on BBC1 (previous episodes were on BBC2), and somehow this became simply the 'first ever episode' in the Daily Mail as linked above (and elsewhere), presumably for dramatic effect. It was the only missing episode outside Series 1.

I have a feeling that this thread needs to be split into two!
