Didn’t Phil Morris claim he was going to ‘name and shame’ the enigmatic individual he believed was in possession of Web 3 a while back or did I just imagine/misremember that?! Regardless, if there was ever any truth to Web 3 getting sensationally smuggled out of Nigeria at the behest of some Blofeld type film collector then this announcement is hardly confirmation that the episode is irrevocably lost. Indeed, given that this will now be the third time the Beeb have milked Web’ they’ll hardly have any qualms doing so a fourth time in the event that the elusive episode 3 turns up! Go on then Beeb, take my money. Again. Addendum: ....or possibly not! Just watched the trailer and I’m not liking that CGI-augmented, disconcertingly smooth motion one bit. If that’s representative of the complete animated episode then I may not bother after all. The Patrick Troughton animation looks like it's trying to be the more contemporary Matt Smith's Doctor who himself loosely based his portrayal on Patrick Troughton!

It would be if it was. But it isn't.

It would be if it was. But it isn't. Is the animation used in the trailer going to be used in the official release Richard or was it just a work in progress?

Here's a new look at the DVD along with a video www.doctorwho.tv/news/?article=the-web-of-fear-cover-art-special-features-revealedExcited to see this one come out finally. I feel they held off as long as they could for the third episode. But at some point it's either "continue to wait" or "produce a product". Though that animation ... umm ... looks like a 3D Animation team. :/ Not thrilled by it personally, but it is what it is. What do you all think?

The cover art is sort of tacky looking and odd; quite horrible. While the animation is ... abominable (someone had to use that word, so might as well be me!).
Perhaps the worst aspect is that it makes some of the actors' heads/faces - especially Nicholas Courtney - look like they're carved from a block of wood some of the time & quite dehumanised. Rather disturbing, especially so for any viewer who happens to be a friend or family member, I would imagine. The arm movements are very silly - they move like Thunderbirds puppets when making wide gestures.
There probably are some positive things but the above seem to dominate the thing. If I was a member of BBC staff directly responsible for this or a member of the animation's creative team I would feel quite embarrassed by this animation - & no amount of possible hype about it in the special features will make me feel otherwise (unless this segment is untypical of the whole animated episode). I can't imagine that anyone could put their hand on their heart and say that overall this is a reasonable or even acceptable piece of animation for an official release. If it were a not for profit fan-made thing alone and not a significant part of a commercial release, then no problem, it could then be good for a quick bemused watch & commended for the fact people took the trouble to put it together, even though it doesn't work very well.
This no doubt all sounds harsh and my intention isn't to hurt anyone's feelings but it is part of a commercial release by a large organisation (the BBC) and is trumpeted as being a big part of this new blu-ray/dvd. If people don't make appropriate comments about such aesthetic shoddiness they will just make more of the same - though ok they may well do that anyway however many people may point out such problems, as most of us will still buy it (me included) for the improved picture/sound & special features; so disapproval of the animation may not be obvious from the total sales. Hopefully the special features in general will be good.
Does anyone know if the Telesnap recon is a new one or the same one which was on the previous DVD release?
To sum up; all I can say is: Come back Reign Of Terror animation - all is (nearly) forgiven!

I think I must be the only one that actually enjoyed that trailer...we're never going to see it again so its better than nothing. Not sure about being in colour though, otherwise...fine.

Sounds like some like it - fair enough. I didn't like the trailer either but in my post 3 posts above I was talking about the new excerpt (about 3 minutes long) from the actual animated episode. If you click on Mark's link 4 posts above, on that website it has this newly uploaded, previously unseen animated segment. It has Troughton etc. getting briefed on events by Colonel LS (Courtney).

Oh....I see what you mean...most odd. Theres so much going on, that they dont even look like themselves. Ill buy it, because anything that upgrades WHO to as near the real thing as possible is a plus...its a shame that with so much attention to detail that they forgot to make them look like the actors.

Mmm, very strange. Why oh why don’t the BBC and their subcontractors settle on a consistent style of animation and stick to it. Much as I prefer animation to recons & despite this being my favourite story, due to the poor quality of the animation I won’t be buying this release. Roll on the recovery of episode 3. Why oh why have they gone for making everyone look like Crichton off Red Dwarf!!! If this was prep work for some sort of bizarre Deep Fake experiment you could understand it.

I'm not too keen on the animation myself, but I'm buying it anyway. Any sale is a good one. The beeb can get a little tight with dvds. If Web doesnt sell, it's just possible that the beeb will turn round and say "oh, people dont want the animations anymore" and pull the plug on other potential animations that I'd prefer to see... Like Evil of the Daleks, Abominable Snowmen, or... well, given how little we have of it, The Space Pirates would be a laugh

Lets have a little consistency in the approach if poss? If you have two houses doing animations, maybe one looks at Troughton, the other on the Hartnell's. Keep each Doctor consistent at least! But hey - I'll be getting it and all the future releases!

I was I will admit less than thrilled when I saw the trailer but I will be picking it up any way. I can sort of understand why they did not go all big budget wide screen for one episode alone when it will stick out like a light bulb. Now if "The Evil of the Daleks" and "The Abominable Snowman" look like this I will be really disappointed.
One guess that with so many characters to animate just for one single episode they probably decided early on it was not cost effective to create all of those characters that are in the episode just to do one episode and they were not going to animate all 6 episodes just so it looks like "The Faceless Ones" and the other animations.
