Hi all, 57th birthday treat in so much as the 3rd episode of The Web of Fear is being animated and the set is available for pre-order on the usual sites. I know we all want the original episode, but I think we knew they would tag in this work to the work being (supposedly) done on The Abominable Snowman. www.doctorwho.tv/news/?article=the-web-of-fear-new-animationFingers crossed they can still track down the original stolen episode, but this will tide us over for now. Also announced is the 50th anniversary steelbook set with a bundle of extras on it. Art work on these steelbooks (visible on Zoom, but not Amazon as of right now) continues to look superb www.gallifreyannewsroom.com/?p=10382

It looks like the powers that be have given up on WoF3.
They can have a second bite of the cherry with an animated episode, but will they get a third?

What extras are going to be in the SteelBook? I don't normally bother with them otherwise.

Didn’t Phil Morris claim he was going to ‘name and shame’ the enigmatic individual he believed was in possession of Web 3 a while back or did I just imagine/misremember that?!
Regardless, if there was ever any truth to Web 3 getting sensationally smuggled out of Nigeria at the behest of some Blofeld type film collector then this announcement is hardly confirmation that the episode is irrevocably lost. Indeed, given that this will now be the third time the Beeb have milked Web’ they’ll hardly have any qualms doing so a fourth time in the event that the elusive episode 3 turns up!
Go on then Beeb, take my money. Again.
Addendum: ....or possibly not! Just watched the trailer and I’m not liking that CGI-augmented, disconcertingly smooth motion one bit. If that’s representative of the complete animated episode then I may not bother after all.

Would be surprised if there is not at least as making of doco, plus a bit of chat about the whole "found it, lost it" issue. Very close now to having the whole of season 5 available now (original or animated), so you would think it's primed to be the first set of the 60's to be released in the Blu-ray collection set format.

Will be worth getting because no doubt there'll be some good special features + at least slightly improved picture & sound quality.
But man that smooth motion in the animated non-episode trailer looks truly awful! Troughton's face is done very well though a bit too cgi looking, but this is ruined by the far too smooth motion. Maybe (fingers crossed) the actual animation for episode 3 won't have this mode of motion.
Come back bendy arms (Fury) & too-young constantly smug Troughton face (Faceless Ones) - all is forgiven!!

Really heartbroken that this Special Edition isn't being released with a recovered live-action episode 3.I always thought that the lack of any info about this release was a good sign that Philip Morris was still looking and wouldn't be released until he had actually found it.I suppose it's still within the realms of possibility that Web 3 could be returned but it's looking increasingly likely that if it was stolen and together with Philip's private collectors who have at least 6 other missing episodes, the emotional value of MEs is so high amongst their owners as to be on par with remnants of the True Cross-we may never see it (or the other 6) again in our lifetime.

When I brought this up on Facebook, Phil responded to say the animation was a business decision and had no bearing on the loss or recovery.
My question now is if Region 1 will even get it. Since we were passed over for the Enemy SE.

With the difference that the others were not stolen or even if they were, then not recently. I wonder if they couldn't start any proceedings against the perpetrator. Even Nigeria has laws.

I doubt that Phil will ever name-and-shame as the feedback from both him & Paul is that this would be counterproductive. The most recent interview I've heard (the one where he made the revelation about The Missing Six), he said about WOF3 “we do have an idea of where that episode is” ... which leads me seriously doubting whether the culprit (assuming he has identified the correct person) even admits to having it. Given these comments and the manner in which it was acquired, I’d rate WOF3 as one of the least likely of the six episodes to be returned during my lifetime. But if it were returned in a couple of years time say, I doubt whether the BBC would consider this latest animation a waste of money. Quite the opposite in fact as they would have milked WOF that be more.

I just watched the trailer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsG6QRSpS40 Is this the first official recreation of an original trailer? Also if Evil of the Daleks and The Abominable Snowmen are being animated as well, that would make Victoria the first and only main character of sixties Doctor Who to have a fully watchable run in one form or another barring her brief appearance at the beginning of the Wheel in Space. All the other main characters: (The First Doctor, Susan, Ian, Barbara, Vicki, Steven, Katarina, Sara, Dodo, Ben, Polly, The Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe) all still have gaps that can only be seen with tele-snap recreations.

It quite obviously proves nothing of the sort. Let’s hope we do get Web 3 back eventually though....not least because the animation in that teaser trailer looks bloody awful!
