Hi Folks,
New member here. I've dipped in and out off this website from time to time, finding the treasure hunt aspect of missing TV and Radio quite compelling. I think it's great people are working to preserve the things that might otherwise slip through the cracks.
As a retro tech fan, I recently acquired some reel to reel audio tapes which feature many TV and radio recordings as broadcast in the sixties and early seventies. Evidently, the person who did the recording was keen on feature film musicals, sitcoms and radio comedy. It's been fascinating trawling through them and getting a little snapshot of entertainment from the analogue age.
Of particular interest was a good quality recording of (what appears to be) a segment from the documentary TV series 'All Our Yesterdays' which features an interview with Barnes Wallis, discussing the background to the famous Dambusters raid. The digging I've done on this site ( and others ) suggests this may be an early episode of the series' first run and that most (if not all) of these programmes are currently listed as missing. Could this be a little nugget of interest? My understanding is that these shows consisted largely of stock footage and newsreel material but this seems to be a major interview conducted by the show's preseter. I'm guessing that even if the programmes themselves are missing that the original material may still exist on a producer's shelf somewhere.
I bought the tapes because I'm a bit of a space nut and some were marked as having Project Apollo material on them. Right enough, one reel has extensive BBC coverage (panel discussions and interviews, also James's Burke commentary & Reg Turnell new reports) of the return flight of Apollo 15. My reading here suggests that the British TV record of the later Apollo flights may be patchy so was wondering if these might be of any value? On a separate reel there's even a truncated Reuters news report from Moscow concerning Yuri Gagarin's flight.
It was difficult to ascertain some of the contents of the reels because, although there are rough handwritten notes listing the titles of programmes, some sections were recorded at a speed my player couldn't replicate (chipmunk dialogue). I've had to use a smartphone app to slow down bits and pieces. There are some old Dad's Armies on there and a variety of other stuff, but I've looked into the specifics and nothing else appears to be lost material.
Just trying to get a feel for whether the above is worth reporting?
