But seriously, the technical side of the story is vague. I had heard of EMP, but not of SHINE which seems to have, short distance at least, nearly the same effect. Google SHINE and the first thing you find is the article you came from. It can't be the only TV of that ype still in operation? This was down to a faulty power supply (component failure) in the TV rather than the type or model, emitting severe interference on AM, both back down the overhead mains supply & by direct radiation. This manifested in severe erroring, overloading the error correction on the broadband services and making the dynamic line management wind down the broadband speeds to, in effect, nothing. Someone, somewher, will be (to use an in vogue word) attempting to weaponise this. Soon these old tellies could be issued to every crack fighting unit. And the Home Guard could have their hands poised over the knobs.

Don’t get too hung up on SHINE & REIN. They are just industry anacronyms describing interference that typically causes problems for RF telecom services. Shine and Rein. The perfect name for a cop show. Next time on "SHINE and REIN" The daring detectives discover that television and the internet don't mix!
