Dear all, Just seen this. I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to archive finds, but anyone know about it? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv0mml3JeCA"Incredible archive of lost footage featuring over 150 lost performances from TOTP and many other shows recorded during the period 1971 to 1976. Artists featured include TRex, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Sweet, Slade, Mungo Jerry, Elvis Presley, 10cc, Status Quo, Roxy Music, Canned Heat and many more. In addition to TOTP performances there are also recordings from shows such as Lift Off, Benny Hill, Dick Emery, Dave Cash, Saturday Variety. The performances were recorded by a Welsh gentleman on 42 domestic tape reels and were recorded direct from the television via the 405 line system using a Sony CV-2000 which was one of the first video tape recorders produced for home use. These were catalogued and collated on behalf of various record companies with the monochrome recordings having been digitally transferred."

Great spot Tone.
It’s confusing isn’t it.
There was a sale on eBay of some old tapes. A thousand nicker they went for.
There is a list of contents but too busy to check right now.
Any connection with the tapes kal got? They used a clip of Rocket man in that documentary with John Reid strumming away.

Never ever seen the Rod clip of Maggie May before, would this be 21/10/1971 ? brilliant live vocal ( diff live vocal the normal MM clip ), dont wanna seem a geek , but i'd say his hair lookls just slightly longer so must be the 2nd appearance, Ronnie Lane playing drums !!!!!

Fascinating to see the pre-Les McKeown Bay City Rollers. This was broadcast on 30-09-71 (repeated 14-10-71).

Rod Stewart performed Maggie May on three different occasions on Top Of The Pops. The first was on 18/8/71, the second on 30/9/71 and the third - the one with John Peel that has always been in the BBC archives - on 21/10/71. All featured a live vocal. The clip on You Tube is from 30/9/71 - the band are all miming each others instruments, Woody on organ, Ronnie Lane on drums, Mac and Kenney Jones on bass/guitar. There is also a mandolin player - don't know who he is though. This performance of Maggie May is the Holy Grail for RS fans. Absolutely hilarious and chaotic, much much better than the one the BBC saved. The debut performance from 18/8/71 has also been recovered, Ian McLagan mimes mandolin on this one. This means all three Maggie May performances now exist. And while I'm here, the next time Rod would be on Top of the Pops would be with the Faces performing Stay With Me. This is always listed as "missing" or "wiped" when in fact the performance was an insert from the very much in existence Sounds for Saturday.

Any connection with the tapes kal got? Hi Kev, These are the "405" tapes that had been recovered by KAL, and the owner, who had lent KAL those tapes, has opted to sell them via Omega. It's kind of a strange offering, as these tapes are not playable on any available piece of hardware! KAL had to build custom hardware to play them. You may recall that the hobbyist that taped these used computer tape! There are still more tapes that have yet to be transferred by KAL, but so far seem unplayable. Those tapes are not part of the bundle offered for auction. Regardless, all of the material offered for auction is safe in the KAL archive. All the best, RR

It's that guy that was on here a few years back had the machine and monitor wanted a good few grand for the lot. No it isn't Ron, it is Mary Hadfield who bought the tapes at a car boot sale in North Wales.
Kaleidoscope have returned most of the tapes to Mary as per part of the agreement.
It is Mary who has put the tapes up for auction.

Oh right wasn't aware of this, be interesting to see if they sell seeing as said above any owner could never play them, or do they get digital transfers as indicated with the preview reel if so could go for quite a bit.

Are they hoping some Uber fan will throw silly money at it? Or a wealthy pop star? Surely dvds must be part of the package? Copyright remains with the beeb so its hard to see a commercial use for them. All a bit frustrating. The usual case of rare finds being made and joe public never sees the results!
