An interesting item came up for auction recently: www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/omega-auctions/catalogue-id-srom10207/lot-f253c942-7b82-4c0c-9f03-abdc00f3c161I have to say I *did* know about this before the sale date, but a little bird told me that Kal would be putting in a bid so I decided it was best not publicizing it further at that stage. Sadly I understand that Kal were outbid on the day though. I guess it's in the nature of auctions though that the outcome is in the lap of the gods, and these kind of things will happen despite best efforts of those involved. Anyway my main reason for mentioning it now after the fact is that someone out there did buy this. We can but hope that it was someone else whose motivation was to make the footage available to others. But if they're reading this then now is a good chance for them to make themselves known

Is this a long lost colour test? It’s long before BBC colour transmission in the UK. This is either seriously interesting or an elaborate fake.

It's colour because it's not BBC footage, I guess it's better described as a home movie made on the TOTP set. But still interesting given that the original episode is long since wiped.

Yeah, you are right it’s seriously interesting. Does anyone know if any of the episode’s audio survives on a domestic reel to reel recording that’s come to light?

I realise that I'm doing a 'stable door' job here, but I'm doubtful about the accuracy of the the date given in the description of Fontella Bass performance; surely it can't be from 2nd December 1965, as the screen grabs of the credits also mention David & Jonathan and The Overlanders. Far more likely that this is from 6 January 1966, as the aforementioned acts appeared on that date, according to Popscene's TOTP database. Ironically, Fontella's track on that date was 'Recovery' !

Hopefully it is 06-01-1966 as audio exists for that one! This would be the penultimate Manchester show.

Hmm, “Includes a DVD of the footage”. I would imagine this implies that the seller will also have a digital copy which gives another potential option for recovery.

If the digital copy was used for the pictures then it looks quite an old conversion...or done with a camcorder to screen. If the original movie was focused well then it should scrub up well with a modern conversion to digital.

It's also not the only colour 8mm footage of Behind the Scenes on TOTP in the 1960s...

I always get the titles of that and the similarly named Hollies track mixed up - didn’t even realise I’d done so again here until you noticed! youtu.be/fLHfr1vBmuM
