Can anyone find out anything about the other music acts in the opening episode dated 1 January 1963 please ? Episode 11/1/63 18.25 : The 625 Showin which Jimmy Young presents artists of the future. The Three Bachelors, The Belltones, The Eagles, The Honeys, Zack Laurence, Gay Pursue, Verne Rogers and the Hi-Fi's, The Sunrays, Cas Turewicz Contributors Presenter: Jimmy Young Musicians: The Three Bachelors Musicians: The Belltones Musicians: The Eagles Singers: The Honeys Musician: Zack Laurence Singer: Gay Pursue Musicians: Verne Rogers and the Hi-Fi's Dancers: The Sunrays [Raymond (Brian) Newham and Susan Grosvenor] Performer: Cas Turewicz Music: Edwin Braden Design: Desmond Chinn Production: Albert Stevenson............................ The Eagles were a British music quartet active from 1958 until the mid-1960s. They formed in 1958 at the Eagle House youth club in Knowle West, Bristol.[1] Led by lead guitarist Terry Clarke (11 June 1944, Bristol – 29 October 2008),[2] who used a homebuilt custom instrument, the group included drummer Rod Meacham (born Roderick Meacham, 25 March 1943, Bristol, died 21 March 2002, Bristol), bassist Michael Brice (born 4 March 1944, Bristol), and Johnny Payne on rhythm guitar (born John Payne, 1944). Playing primarily instrumental rock, they began their career playing local venues in Bristol such as dance halls. They were launched into the world of professional music in 1962 after being noticed by composer Ron Grainer, probably best remembered for his theme to Doctor Who. Grainer was interested in The Eagles for a film project he was working on, Some People, about a fictional Bristol band not unlike themselves. The Eagles contributed to the Some People soundtrack, and became Grainer's protégés, recording new versions of some of his film score work such as the theme of the Maigret television series. The Some People soundtrack reached No.2 on the EP charts, and remained on the charts for 21 weeks.[1][3] The Eagles were awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Trophy for their work on the film, and soon after were signed to Pye Records, at the time among the top three labels in Britain. After releasing the singles "Bristol Express" and "Exodus (Main Theme)", The Eagles embarked on a major tour of England along with Del Shannon, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Tillotson, and Dionne Warwick. The tour lasted much of 1963, during which their debut album, Smash Hits From The Eagles, was released in the UK and the United States. The following year brought their most successful single and the one for which they are best remembered today, a vocal rendition of "Wishin' and Hopin' " backed with "Write Me a Letter". After The Eagles Clarke continued to play with local bands until the 1980s and then played as a duet with his wife (building his wife's bass guitar) in Bristol until his death in 2008. Payne returned to Bristol and also continued to play with local bands. Brice continues his music career playing with the band 'The Ivy League'. The Eagles' music is available on many compilation albums of the era, and in 1998 Sanctuary Records released a 61 track double album set, Smash Hits from The Eagles and The Kestrels. Past members: Terry Clarke, Rod Meacham, Michael Brice, Johnny Payne Genres: Rock Years active: 1958–1964 Origin: Bristol, England The picture of The Eagles below is from the NME dated 19th October 1962 they had musical equipment worth £1,500 stolen at the time. That was an enormous amount of money in 1962. ............................ www.thehi-fis.co.uk/roger-newell.html The Hi- Fi’s have not had contact with Roger Newell since they parted company back in April 1963. We would really like to make contact again with him and if any persons looking on this website can assist with this, then please use the contact us section on the website. .......................... From Radio Times "in which Jimmy Young presents artists of the future." Hosted by singer/presenter Jimmy Young and recorded at the BBC's studios in Bristol. The show was named after its evening starting time and used talent new to television, not just singers and groups but everything from dancers to puppets acts. Despite the 'artists of the future' tag it would also give time to relative veterans like Alexis Korner and Gerry Dorsey (both around since the late fifties). Merseybeat would also be represented by visits by Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas, Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Swinging Blue Jeans and one of The Beatles many missing appearances. It also gave time to future production maestro Mickie Most, singer/songwriter Lesley Duncan and a pre-fame Gordon Lightfoot. After its first thirteen week run in Bristol the show moved to London from 9th April 1963 until the end of its run in the autumn. Ventriloquist Ray Alan presented a few of the later shows.

He was born in Christianburg, Guyana. Raye came to England to learn acting, studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art[1] His singing style was reflective of Nat King Cole. A nine-time winner of the British TV talent contest Opportunity Knocks, he recorded such popular songs as "Mona Lisa", "How Sweet It Is", and "Come Home Love" and toured widely with his cabaret tribute show to Cole.[1] He also starred in, produced and directed a television tribute to Cole, A Nightingale Sang, in 1985, in which he sang alongside the likes of Nina Simone, Will Gaines and Danny Williams.[1] He was also an opening act for such performers as The Supremes and Eartha Kitt. He was best known for the semi-regular role of Burt in the Black British sitcom Desmond's, as a member of The Georgetown Dreamers, a band that featured Desmond (Norman Beaton) and Raye's fellow real-life musicians Porkpie (Ram John Holder) and Vince (Count Prince Miller). Other television roles included an appearance in Runaway Bay, whilst also acted in a number of theatre productions.[1] Sol Raye was also the President of New Target Records, headquartered at 47c Queens Gate, London SW7 5JN. I wonder how many of those nine-time winner of British TV Talent contest Opportunity Knocks exist in the archive?

There is a link to the band called The Checkmates with the following Search Term ... The Checkmates - West Point- RGM Joe Meek Can anyone find out if this might have been The Checkmates that appeared in Episode 4 of The 625 Show? I've no idea if they appeared on the TV show, but the Checkmates who recorded for Joe Meek were I believe the group who had been with Emile Ford as Emile Ford and the Checkmates (aka The Original Checkmates) 'West Point' was an instrumental B-side written by Alan Hawkshaw and I imagine featured some of Joe Meek's usual session musicians www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqYDWvReAlQen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_HawkshawThe A-side was a dreadful Joe Meek effort 'You've got to have a gimmick today' released in March, 1963 (a year before the Barron Knights) www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZT4D4DSPfw

Steve PerryThe Cresters: The Cresters were originally put together as backing band for singer Mike Sagar. The trio comprised brothers Richard and John Harding on guitar and bass respectively, and Johnny Casson on drums, and were active right through to the 1980s. At various points they were known as Malcolm Clark & The Cresters as well as The Crestas. The Cresters The Cresters Probably the highlight of their career was as tour support for The Beatles in 1963. Guitarist Richard Harding built up a reputation for his guitar playing, and in an era when most aspiring musicians could barely afford the most basic equipment, Richard was able to make use of his dad's music shop and regularly took to the stage with his beloved Gretsch White Falcon, which cost £700 at the time - 18 months wages for most people in the early 1960s! The band signed to HMV and recorded a couple of singles in 1960/61 with Mike Sagar, followed by a fallow period which was broken by two further singles on the label in 1964, of which "I Just Don't Understand" is the most memorable. The following year saw a one-off release for Fontana Records but after that, like so many beat bands, they moved onto the cabaret circuit. Drummer, Johnnie Casson is now a successful comedian with TV appearances under his belt, while Richard Harding is currently a member of country band, Dillinger.
