If something were to happen to Paul, those episodes would be the last thing on my mind.
Rest assured though. I’m sure he keeps himself safe.
He only skydives twice a week, swims with sharks every weekend, and drag races on the highway three times a month, maximum.
And for those worried about the episodes: He takes them with him each adventure to ensure they stay safe. No unforeseen mishaps happening on his watch!

Out of interest, is Paul the only one who knows who has these missing episodes? Is the knowledge of who has these prints stored elsewhere? I mean what if (God forbid) something happened to Paul! That would be a shame, wouldn't it. I do hope you didn't think my post was in bad taste. Reading it back it could be interpreted that your life is in some way less valuable than a TV episode! Obviously that wasn't my intention. I do hope you're keeping safe and well! And please accept my apologies for the clumsy wording of my post!

Wouldn't it be great if someone decided to return just a single episode to lift spirits in the coronavirus crisis? Unlikely I know but maybe if these are out there someone could feel altruistic and give us all something to celebrate?
Or even better they could auction it online for NHS/Care home staff thereby some good would come of it. Not going to happen I know (I have no knowledge of any private collectors but defer to Paul V and other people) but we would all benefit then.

I think we’re now in the situation where those with MEs - particularly WoF3 - know that they’ve got something unique and that there are many people out there who’d really appreciate seeing them. City of Death......

In a previous post I tried to explain how, as a Vinyl Collector, the mind of a Collector works, ...you are all Collectors, you are all desperate to see these episodes and get them into your DVD collections. So albeit, a very mild case of obsession,on the other hand, these collectors may have been collecting for 40 or 50,maybe even more years and collecting is an Obsession. There have been numerous times when the BBC, and the programme itself have put out pleas for any returns , on TV, in the media and online. As a collector I cant believe that Collectors don't know what they have or they wouldn't have got them in the first place. Plus they have must have had some kind of discussion about them, for Phil to know what he claims, so there cant be any excuse for these people NOT to know what they have. I suspect, the only way to prise these episodes from the Collectors is by Monetary means. All the guff about rights, belonging to the BBC etc is totally irrelevant. It is not of interest. Money may possibly be the key...Maybe a crowd funding exercise or a madly rich uber fan might save the day because I so believe some of these episodes will not appear otherwise. Agree with this wholeheartedly. Coming from a background collecting rare Cornishware, I've seen what the pursuit or possession of a rare named storage jar can do to people! One jar labelled 'white sugar' turned up a few years back and it was a previously unknown name, so that collector was over the moon - until another turned up six months later... One collector even bragged "I've got some amazing pieces but nobody knows what I've got!" which was undoubtedly true but not exactly playing fair. So greed, a desire to keep that 'holy grail' missing episode 'missing' (if it goes back, it might be seen not to be 'special' anymore) and a distrust of the BBC and others would be (in the minds of some collectors) justification for them keeping the episodes to themselves. Oh and hi, I've not been on here for five years...

Welcome back. It does rather take a fully blown obsessed collector to understand , doesn't it? But then Phil, Paul etc etc work in the field of finding lost material, so they are aware of its value, especially to us and to the BBC, just look at the sales that Enemy and Web garnered. Sometimes, the only way to a conclusion is to speak the exact same language.

I think you're making Collectors seem very polarised. We can all have hobbies, but they don't have to be all-consuming. I collect SF/fantasy books, but if I thought I had something in my collection which lots of people desperately wanted to read I'd give it out. Life's hard enough. Richard

Ah the apparently indomitable passions, obsessions, dedication, etc, etc, etc of the zealous collector and all that. ...Being of an incorrigibly cynical disposition I'd love to know where the 'collector's mindset' ends and the lure of commerce begins though. Impossible to quantify of course but still. In other words everyone has their price and that apparently intractable 'passion' for collecting and/or the possession of something unique that they could never part with et al usually goes out the window whenever sufficient financial recompense is proffered! I therefore suspect that the presumed recalcitrance of these collectors can be attributed more to what my octogenarian mother calls 'awkward old bugger syndrome'! At least until, as I say, the ineluctable lure of cold hard cash enters the fray. P.S. Just to clarify, I'm not advocating paying for missing material, merely lamenting the scrofulous tendencies of human nature!

The chances of there being a DW ME in any of those are as close to zero as makes no difference.
However, DW MEs have been recovered from collectors.

Yep, fair enough. Just thought it might have been a possibility with so many different cans on sale on there all the time.

There are collectors around - and who post here - who’ve seen/handled 16mm prints for decades and never seen a DW print.
They’re about as common as hen’s teeth.

Very occasionally a genuine missing episode (no, not of Doctor Who) is advertised and sold on eBay. An example is episode 6 of Hugh and I Spy, a mid-60s comedy series starring Terry Scott and Hugh Lloyd, in 2013. It's a while since I've seen anything missing advertised on eBay, but I do check from time to time. Be warned: you might find someone claiming, innocently or otherwise, that the item they're selling is "missing TV". It ain't necessarily so (I've intervened in two such cases). Do your research before bidding! (Better still, let Paul V. know.)
