'The Beatles ("Twist and Shout," "I'll Get You," "She Loves You"), Helen Shapiro ("Look Who It Is," "No Trespassing"), Eden Kane ("Like I Love You"), and Tony Meehan (interview). Dusty Springfield is a guest presenter.' Thanks. However I note that that's only two additional guests and two more songs than listed above by Peter, which would seem in total like a lot less content than the other episodes listed. Were the earlier episodes shorter? That episode also included the lip-syncing contest, and a dance demonstration (the hitchhiker). Additional time is taken up by interviews with The Beatles, and with the 2 dancers. The episode runs around 39 minutes.

There's a tiny fragment of a Lucky Stars show in it. Merseybeats I think of You, from Jan 64 I believe. First reshowing in over 50 years! That full Merseybeats clip is now online albeit with a slightly annoying watermark/logo (not too bad). Will this be the beginning of a slew of related clips unearthed for those two shows?

I did record all the DC RSG shows, they started with the Soul special. The Beatles special got issued on VHS - I grabbed one before it got stopped by Apple, prob.
I don't remember ever seeing the bit before where John Lennon meets Penny Rimbaud from Crass on the original rebroadcast but I did see it more recently on YouTube so maybe I missed it, and maybe it got sourced from some offcut pile.

It should be pointed out that The Beatles special had absolutely nothing to do with 'Ready, Steady, Go!', despite what it said on the cover. It is in fact 'Around The Beatles' minus the guests and the Shakespearean comedy sketch. There were though 3 volumes of genuine RSG clips released on VHS (I almost wore my copies out at the time!).

FWIW, in the late David Cavanagh's epic history of Creation Records, 'My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry For The Prize' there's an 80s anecdote in there somewhere about Penny Rimbaud encouraging friends to tune in to the RSG repeat that night cos he was on it, which would suggest it was part of one of the 80s shows. www.amazon.co.uk/Creation-Records-Story-Magpie-Hungry/dp/0753506459

Only just got to watch this doc (I said I would watch it with my Mum, and lockdown got it the way), and I was wondering where the rehearsal footage of Donovan doing ‘Hey Gyp’ in 1965 came from? Had no idea that existed.

Can anybody confirm that the Beach boys "dance dance dance" actually survives?. Its been quoted in several places that the song was performed but i've certainly never seen it. Maybe it never made it on the transfer from video to film?

The Lennon / Rimbaud clip was certainly part of the 1985 repeats, Mark; I had previously been in a band that had toured and played gigs with Crass, and Penny wasn't a guy that had spoken about the past very much, least of all anything pre-punk. I'd left the band three years prior to the RSG rebroadcasts, and when I saw the section with Jeremy, I recognised him immediately and nearly choked on my Findus Crispy Pancakes! Mind you, his choice of albums (Shostakovich and Mingus) was less of a surprise, given his eclectic and artistic tastes.
