They are definitely new, and come from Kaleidoscope's fairly recent haul of 425 line material.

Nice clips. Surprised they didn't overdub new stereo soundtracks over the video as they were miming, a 5 minute job using Sony Vegas.

Are all the tapes in this quality I wonder. I’m glad they survive but I think they are beyond restoration . I wonder if the Bowie Clip if it does survive is in this quality if so I can see why it wouldn’t be shown on tv ever

I wonder if the Bowie Clip if it does survive is in this quality if so I can see why it wouldn’t be shown on tv ever Yes beyond restoration at the current time. In the past I have restored tapes that have tracking issues. But in this case it is so extreme I don't see how it could be done. I would say the tapes have stretched slightly. The audio suggests edge damage which causes problems with the sync pulses too. And the equipment to play them is probably on its last legs and rare. I'm surprised we don't already have some way to read everything from any tape and reconstitute it using a computer. Maybe it will come and that's why master tapes should be kept whenever possible. Another way of looking at it is that these tapes are artifacts. Like digging up a battered, partly broken, 1,000 year old pot. It will never look the way it did 1,000 years ago but at least gives us a glimpse.

Agreed. We are very fortunate to see this in any condition.

Was the recent Elton John rocket man footage found on the same tapes as these performances from lift off? If not where was that found ?

My understanding is that they all come from the same source, but the TOTP recordings were on different tapes from the Lift Off recordings, and it appears that the Lift Off tapes were viewed more than the others.

I absolutely love the quality. We know it ain't going to be perfect so for me this is perfect. Of the time. As I remember. Beautiful.

This sort of recording can be painstakingly restored / recreated if someone is dedicated enough to spend the time. Just look at the what has been achieved with the recovered See Emily Play TOTP 405 line recording. Look at the before and after fan restoration which was on YouTube.
