Came across this article from (TV Guide) magazine dated Jan 18th 1962. It has an article that introduces The Flintstones to the STV viewers. I had just turned 6 so excellent timing for me. This was the first episode shown in Scotland a week later ...

It was great when the BBC1 showed it at 5.35 before the 6pm news in the 1980s, before Neighbours took over the slot, that used to be lunchtime and repeated the next morning, but schoolkids asked for an evening slot. A lot of the Hanna Barbera cartoons were shown around that time, including the last runs of "Boss Cat" before it was shown as "Top Cat" I wonder what happened to the BBC Boss Cat prints.

I remember The Flintstones repeats in the 1980s used to have a scene from somewhere the episode shown before the opening titles as a teaser. I presume this was to fill up time to 25 minutes, as the episode would have been 22-23 minutes. Oddly I was thinking about them just the other day.

A few of the Flintstone episodes also had the wrong date in the titles, and a few also had Pebbles & Bam Bam titles rather than the regular ones, but with 166 episodes there would be some variations. I still have some of the 1980s run on tape, along with an episode listing in a diary.

IIRC Pebbles & Bam Bam were added to the titles after they came into the show, but as these might have been syndicated prints they could have been messed about with. I heard the Top Cat syndicated prints for some reason used the end titles from just one episode, irregardless of who actually contributed.

The Pebbles and Bam Bam titles were completely different as was the tune, rather than adding the characters to the original titles. They were only on a few episodes in the BBC prints. These from a 1965 Episode end titles

Here are the Original 1965 Titles at the same points, just noticed that Hanna & Barbera are in a different order on the Pebbles and Bam Bam variant. Did this change on the normal titles as well.

I wonder what happened to the BBC Boss Cat prints. Probably thrown away. I reckon they were the same prints that were made for the first showing by the BBC in 1962. By the time of the last screening in 1989 they were probably broadcast from tape. The BBC should have called him Splice Cat.

Even the Boss Cat caption card looked like a page from a colouring book that had been filled in by someone who had to use the nearest coloured crayons. For years the BBC showed Santa Claus: The Movie from a print that had more grain than an unrestored episode of The Sweeney, with matte lines very visible. The last time I saw it on TV A much sharper print was used, probably cleaned up for a DVD or Blu-Ray release.

The first two frames are from a BBC broadcast of the Pink Panther Show in 1990. To be fair, the other episodes shown in the 80s and 90s looked quite nice. These seemed to be the earliest cartoons from 1964/65. Even so it's hard to understand how they ended up looking this ghastly. They look many generations down from the negative. Below Super 8 quality. The third shot is from a good quality 1969 episode. The panther is smoking and selling pills! I used to go to the cinema and see these around 1970.

Ive just rebuilt an episode [Griswald] of Boss Cat, from the 1999 BBC2 showings and the TiTle Card from VHS, and fixed the Jump in the Audio of the End Titles, so its possible to rebuild all the episodes if the Boss Cat Originals have gone for good. Im Sure The Title Card can be improved to Broadcast Standard too [Although i like the original home made effect], also made it 1920x1080 "HE Quality will probably run one off HG quality too.
I did notice in the Original 1989 titles of the episode i was using the Title Card comes up when TC is at the table with his bib, at that "Top Cat" in the audio, which is much earlier than other episodes when he get into the Taxi, another Splice Cat probably.

This is completely off topic but that picture of Wilma in the TV Guide reminded me of the funniest Flintstones reference ever.
From Red Dwarf:
Lister: Cat. Cat: Mm? Lister: Did you ever see the Flintstones? Cat: Of course. Lister: Do you think Wilma’s sexy? Cat: Wilma Flintstone? Lister: Maybe we’ve been alone in deep space for too long but every time I see that show, her body drives me crazy. Is it just me? Cat: I think in all probability, Wilma Flintstone is the most desirable woman who ever lived. Lister: That’s good, I thought I was goin’ strange. Cat: She’s incredible! Lister: What do you think of Betty? Cat: Betty Rubble? Well, I would go with Betty…but I’d be thinkin’ of Wilma. Lister: This is stupid. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone? Cat: You’re right. We’re nuts. This is an insane conversation. Lister: She’ll never leave Fred and we know it.
