There were two recollections from Fury which people who watched it at the time told me about. One was being told with a shudder that it was the story where the stuff was growing all over you, the other was how funny they thought it was seeing the look on the Doctor's face when he shoves a load of foam into Jamie's face. The arrival of the sonic screwdriver too, I guess.

More of "The Abominable Snowman" would be great. If not hopefully it gets animated and they include episode 3 of "The Web of Fear" with it

More of "The Abominable Snowman" would be great. If not hopefully it gets animated and they include episode 3 of "The Web of Fear" with it I grew up in Snowdonia. From the photos and Telesnaps I've seen, I can say the area they filmed it hasn't changed in the 50+ years since they shot it there. It would be nice if, should they animate it, that the animators will stay true to those visuals and not try to make Tibet a snow covered landscape, and be true to the location it was shot. After all, Snowdonia doesn't look too far off from the Tibetan landscapes below the snow line.

I also remember hearing one of the two of them tell me how creepy it was when Victoria was sitting on a bench and the foam was dripping down the wall behind her and towards her.

From my vague memories of the broadcasts, it always stuck in my mind as one of - in fact probably the most - scary adventure. The music & sound effects (& the screaming) stayed with me to some extent, mixed up with odd images of foam & weed. The specific bit I can most recall though is that it was quite frightening when the female character walks into the sea, with all the overtones of suicide that this scene has. If I remember right its frighteningness was probably largely due to the quietly done slow pace at which the actress did this; purposefully - with a sort of quiet, almost stately dignity. Though to be fair having also, in more recent times, heard the CD, seen the clips & episode 6 out-takes & watched the fantastic Loose Cannon recon, it's hard to tell sometimes between the actual memories from back then & the later impressions from CD/clips/recon!

Can’t wait to see the animation & see if it stirs any memories.

This thread really has reminded me why this is my most wanted return:
- Badass soundtrack - Introduction of the sonic screwdriver - Significant companion exit - One of the creepiest stories of the 60s - A lot of beautiful outside shots
Please let this one be out there somewhere.

It was sod to very few places which makes it unlikely to be recovered unless there’s an odd episode with a collector.

It was sod to very few places which makes it unlikely to be recovered unless there’s an odd episode with a collector. I'm not picky - I'd take one of the two "even" ones!

I'm well aware, I didn't comment on the likelihood of it being recovered, just that I sincerely hope it's out there. Stranger things have happened, like the fact we have orphan Troughton episodes recovered from collectors yet not a single episode of Marco Polo.

I understand the need to keep fans grounded by presenting the facts about the limited circulation of stories like Fury, but it is fair to say that stories, like Masterplan with very limited circulation have fared remarkably well with recoveries from a variety of sources, so there is always hope.

Nobody can definitively say that an episode/story isn’t out there - proving a negative, etc - although “Feast of Stephen” is probably as close to definitely not coming back as makes no difference, but things like Fury, considering how few prints were struck and how few places there were to check, would not cause me to head for the bookmaker!

Indeed & in fairness as good a reason as any for the animation to be made. I’m just delighted that the somewhat arbitrary 2 episodes missing rule for animation has been abandoned and some of the almost completely missing stories are being tackled now.

At least we are slowly getting more episodes animated. I remember September 2006 when we only had the two episodes of "The Invasion". Fast forward 13 years to 2019 and we have had 3 more Hartnell episode's animated and 14 more Troughton episodes animated with 10 more in the works. I can just imagine where we will be in September 2026?

In a way, it's good that Wheel and Evil of the Daleks aren't being rushed into production.
Sure, they could be more profitable stories, but at the same, there are many great stories with original monsters, and I'm glad they're getting more attention with these animations; people are getting to see more of Troughton's era that they didn't expect of him.
We've heard it before: "Troughton does James Bond" with Enemy of the World, "Troughton does Brave New World" with The Macra Terror.
Next year, we're getting "Troughton does Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Troughton does Jaws", in a way.
I say Jaws, cause Fury had the same technique with its own monster. With Jaws, you didn't always see the shark, but you saw a barrel moving on the surface of the water, and things like that. With that unsettling John Williams score, the barrel itself becomes terrifying, cause wherever that moves, so does the shark.
Same can be said for the foam and seaweed. Wherever THEY go, so does the monster within it, accompanied by a deafening heartbeat ringing through the facility the Doctor, his companions and all the characters of the story are based.
And I would indeed go as far as to say that eerie, bouncy music Dudley Simpson composed for the serial helps to create this frightening and unnerving atmosphere that serves the same purpose as Spielberg's film.
