I ordered about two dozen titles. Bargains! Back in the day, members would have welcomed a Network sale. Have most people got what they need already? A friend was interested in Blu-rays of The Professionals but the site stated that the MI series disc didn't include the book. He messaged Network on 26 Sep and asked whether MII and MIII included the book, as the pages didn't mention. He says he's had no reply so didn't buy and now the sale is over. |

This is a bit of a strange place to bring this up, I know, but it concerns the film 'The Smallest Show on Earth', which I bought in this sale.
There is a scene at about 19 minutes which is missing from the Network release, and as far as I know other releases and TV broadcasts. In a short conversation with Network, they said they knew nothing about it and their release is sourced from the original 35mm negative. That's fair enough, but this scene was included in a BBC 2 broadcast (I *think* 19 Feb 2003) and was recorded by a relative of mine on VHS. Alas, I no longer have the tape.
I would claim, therefore, that this counts as 'lost TV' and ask whether anyone might be able to help recover it.
(In the missing scene, Bill Travers, Virginia McKenna and Leslie Phillips enter the pub and sit at a table, Travers gets up and goes to the bar where he has a conversation with Sid James and then returns to the table).

I appreciate it sounds unlikely Paul, but the only possible mistake is when it was broadcast; it could have been the 1999 BBC 2 showing. My relative recorded the film 4 times, twice from BBC 2 and twice from Channel 5 (always with a poor TV signal hoping for better each time!). I always assumed until the Network release that it was a cut made for TV timing on three broadcasts. There is a reviewer on Amazon (who is not me) who refers to the 'cut' scene too. I now so regret disposing of the videos and of course it's hard to find anyone with similar recordings.

Well here is something to ponder. 1957 released to the cinema 82 mins + a few seconds. 1999/2001 video releases 77 mins + a few seconds. Now if it had been transferred to video on the old Pal tape system 82 mins - 4% speed up = 79 mins So maybe there are 2 minutes missing on the newer reissues? ..but may still be on the pre 1999 original prints? |

The original projection duration is 82 minutes at 24p as is the Network bluray which is from the original negative. Paul Thanks Paul for intervening - from what you have said it confirms that Network must be the blueprint standard for a film on how it was originally intended to be presented as well as an update in ratio where possible. I think the minor TV stations sometimes use old tape copies which were originally used for mastering VHS etc or 'been around the block' duplicate film prints due to availability and budgetary considerations..which of course anything could have happened to them. |

I think it's quite likely that what was seen is actually a cut version. Scene junctions would be different giving the impression that the Network release (being different) is cut, when in fact it's the other way round.
That is not to say that there aren't other versions around, but I for one would have to see some evidence of that, preferably in a physical copy.

I'm not critical of the Network blu-ray at all; I just wanted to clarify with them whether they knew anything about the 'missing scene' (which they didn't). It's hard to be precise now, but it was probably about a minute or so of extra material, which is a bit more than just a 'junction' but not enough that looking at various quoted timings will get us anywhere. I think you might agree that *something* was cut at some point (even if just early in production) because why else would the transition begin with Virginia McKenna walking away in the background like that? It does make complete film-making sense to have cut it (the conversation with Sid James goes nowhere and just sets up a needless coincidence when he turns up later), but obviously it's of interest to Sid James completists (assuming such people exist). Somehow that 'minor TV station' BBC 2 got hold of and broadcast an alternative version with this extra scene. I can't produce a copy of it - I posted here on the unlikely chance that someone else can.
