I am hoping someone can advise here. We have received a query at the Scottish Football Museum regarding this performance which we are all familiar with www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUFFRd27YDw&app=desktopThere are two or three Glasgow Rangers players in the audience and the query is when and where did the recording take place. There is a suggestion this is the 31/12/1964 edition although the TOTP database indicates this track featured around four times around then - not surprising as it made the top slot. I believe TOTP was recorded in Manchester around this time? There were no Rangers matches anywhere in the south during the relevant period but one source claims the sequence was filmed in the Piccadily Club on Glasgows Sauchiehall Street. Is it likely it would have been a film insert on TOTP? With the bands name so prominent it certainly doesn't look like the TOTP set. However I can find no record of the Moody Blues performing anywhere north of the border around the time and it seems unlikely they would travel to Glasgow to record one track. A further theory is that this may have been recorded when Rangers players appeared on Quizball but this can be discounted as it debuted in 1966. Thanks in advance!

Hi Ronnie, I'm willing to help you out by looking at my NME collection. Do you know of any of the Rangers players are shown on the clip ?
I could also look at the Scottish tabloids of the time to see if there was any mention ?

Apparently George McLean (man of many clubs) and Dave Provan William. Possibly James Forest also. On the You Tube I believe that's McLean dancing at around 1.52.

Ronnie, according to the book (Long Distance Voyagers) the Moody Blues appeared on the STV series "Three Go Round" in late December

That's interesting William and certainly ties in with the date. But......... the performance appears to have been recorded in Southampton which makes sense as Three Go Round (introduced by Fred Dineage) was a Southern production. www.webwriter.f2s.com/moody/tourbooks/1964tour.htmwww.tvpopdiaries.co.uk/threegoround.htmlThe first link details the TOTP recording at the Marquee whilst the second clearly underestimates the life of the programme which went out on Thursday afternoons.

Yes the Red Star game looked a good bet but it took place before Go Now was released. One things for sure the recording didn't take place on the 31st December as the traditional New Years day meeting with Celtic was on the 1st.

Perhaps the players could have been down south for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show, representing the club which I believe had been Scottish champions and cup-winners in the 1963/4 season? This was broadcast on Thursday 17th December, but possibly the programme could have been recorded earlier in those days rather than shown live as in later years? genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/0ce8f10a222144a6b9d381307327c133

Thanks John. But I think thats unlikely as I believe the first Scottish side to feature on this annual show were Celtics European Cup winning side three years later. Certainly Rangers are not listed in Genome and they tended not to focus much on us lot up here then! Mind you we did have our own regionalised yearly reviews at the time on both BBC Scotland and STV.

These dates from 1965 seem a better bet as the band were in the middle of some Scottish dates - 19 Newcastle, UK Odeon With Chuck Berry tour 20 Edinburgh, Scotland Usher Hall With Chuck Berry tour 21 BBC Glasgow "A Quick Look Around" Live 21 BBC TV "Top of the Pops" Broadcast date 21 Glasgow, Scotland Odeon With Chuck Berry tour 22 Carlisle, Scotland ABC Theatre With Chuck Berry tour www.webwriter.f2s.com/moody/tourbooks/1965tour.htmGo Now certainly featured on both the 21st and 28th editions of TOTP so it is possible they recorded the number at the Picadilly on 21st.

The 21st January date does appear to be the most likely explanation for the presence of the Rangers' players - is it at all possible that it could have been filmed for inclusion on BBC Scotland's "A Quick Look Around" (a "news magazine" programme it seems) rather than Top of the Pops?
TV Pop Diaries indicates that the Moody Blues ToTP 21st January appearance was a "repeat" (presumably of the promo film which sources appear to agree was shown on 14th January) and the 28th is shown as "disc" - this of course might be speculation rather than fact.

The Go Now performance is from TOTP 21st January 1965. It was repeat showing originally from 31st December 1964. (according to the totp BBC database) The sets loosely match the designs that were used during 1964 using 'table' staging and the strip of circular lights on the walls which can be seen in the Beatles 'Can't Buy Me Love' clip as well.

Thanks for all the info guys. My gut feeling is the recording was for A Quick Look Around which went out live at 18.05 ahead of the bands performance in the Odeon that evening, 21/01/65. I guess its possible it was recorded and included in 28th Januarys TOTP but this theory would contradict Paul Watkins info that the Rangers players appeared on the 31/01/64 edition (thanks Paul). For me it is too much of a coincidence they were at the BBC in Glasgow on 21st January before heading to Carlisle the following day. A Quick Look Around would have gone out from the old Queen Margaret Drive studios although I suppose you cannot completely rule out the Piccadily Club in nearby Sauchiehall Street.

'The Beat Room' featured live performances; this is mimed. I have deleted my post as it's not relevant after your confirmation.

I have copies of the BBC Artist contracts for their Top Of The Pops shows. There are 3 relating to this time period, these are the recording dates - 31 December 1964 in Manchester, this appears to have been a live broadcast or at least recorded and broadcast the same day. 7 January 1965 in London ampex in lieu, possibly broadcast on 14th ? 21 January 1965 in Scotland ampexed in lieu
so I'd assume whichever date the 21 January 1965 ampex was aired is probably the one. Popscene lists 21 Jan as a repeat and 28th Jan as "crowd dancing". It's gonna be one of those two but I can't say which one for sure.
