Hi! This is my first post here. I recently came across this Youtube video, with audio of Bruce's solo appearance on the Dutch tv show TOPPOP: He was on there on December 15, 1970 which appears to be only the second or third EVER episode of the long running series. The video footage isn't posted anywhere online that I can find. And I tried to do some googling, and even read some of the threads on this forum, but it's unclear to me whether the footage still exists at all. Some people have mentioned that the TOPPOP archive is not complete but I'm not sure what the status of this December 15, 1970 show is. So any info on that would be super helpful! My second question is regarding this article I found from a November 1970 magazine: This claims that Bruce and his California Music cohort were set to appear on Top of the Pops by the end of 1974. As far as me and my friends can tell, this performance never aired. What more can you guys illuminate about this? Was it common for songs to be filmed for TOTP and then abandoned? Even after being announced publicly like this one was? Thanks!!

Hi and welcome to the forum I can't answer you query on TopPop as i don't think there is a detailed list of what exists from the early days of the show, perhaps someone else might know. On the topic of Top of the Pops, there are many instances of performances that were pre-recorded for the show that ended up not being shown. This could have been down to various factors such as the record didn't chart at all, the record dropped down the chart during the week it was due to be shown, time issues..... It is highly unlikely that this still survives but there are sections of the archive that still have not been fully cataloged.

I have the Toppop book which lists every appearance, I know a chunk of 1975 was accidentally wiped due to a misunderstanding, the rest of the archive I'm not too sure, especially as the text is all in Dutch (apart from the episode guides). Not Brian Wilson or Bruce Johnston; Bruce Johnston had left the Beach Boys during the previous month (he rejoined the group later in the 70s)

Ok, I think I can shed some light on this. A guy called Alan Boyd is the Beach boys official archivist and a little bird told me he has stated that the top-pop footage is officially missing for both tears in the morning and Marcella. Tears in the morning was not an actual beach boys appearance, but a lip sync solo appearance by Bruce . The beach boys are looking for this footage ! Also, the footage of Marcella might just have Bruce on it . I have seen stills of Bruce on bass in a tv studio with the expanded line up (Blondie and Ricky ) that I cant get info on but I bet that Marcella footage is it! Knocking about somewhere on YouTube is Bruce on top-pop doing his solo hit Pipeline.
Finally Bruce’s solo appearance on ready steady go ( an interview with Keith moon and Kathy McGowan. ) is missing.
Nice bloke Bruce. If you drop him a question on Beach boys Britain website he usually answers.

Nice bloke Bruce. If you drop him a question on Beach boys Britain website he usually answers. This is very interesting to learn that Boyd and Company are after this footage! I wonder if it is in connection to the upcoming copyright extension sets that will feature Tears In The Morning and other songs of its vintage. Through my research I have come across a company called Reelin In The Years, that licenses out out musical footage to companies. Their database is here: reelinintheyears.com/database-search/The following Bruce results show up in a search for The Beach Boys: Bruce Johnson (Beach Boys) Tears In The Morning 1970-12-15 Bruce Johnson (Beach Boys) Disney Girls 1977-00-00 Bruce Johnson (Beach Boys) Pipeline 1977-00-00 Bruce Johnson (Beach Boys) Rendez-Vous 1977-00-00 The first one matches the date of his solo TopPop performance exactly. The Pipeline video is likely his TopPop performance of that tune, but it's unclear when he performed Rendezvous ever, or why those 1977 items don't have a year or month. Alan could probably easily get this company's attention and get his hands on the footage if they have it. Also if you'll check out the Youtube video in my OP, you'll see that Bruce didn't actually lip-sync the performance, but he sang a live vocal and played piano along with a full backing track.Btw thanks to everyone who has responded so far, especially Nicadare for providing those scans of the book!

hi, Let me come back to you on the tears in the morning footage . I know that they have been looking for footage of this for sure. but you are right R.I.T.Y are major player in archive footage so I cant explain why this hasn't come to their attention. BTW thanks for the heads up on the live vocal. Just goes to prove you cant always believe what you read in books!

hi, my mistake, the tears in the morning footage required is from TOP OF THE POPS rather than TOP-POP. My apologies.

One of my favourite OGWT clips is Mr. Bruce putting an entire nation to sleep quicker than Uri Geller by playing a 19 day long version of 'Disney girls'. Poor Bob Harris. He was a very upbeat, loud and vivacious presenter up to that performance.
