I met someone last weekend who doesn't watch TV. Here's why. Her mother was paid to watch three televisions channels at once and take notes on the adverts, and it was an awful job. She was required to write down the time, the channel, and the first three words of each ad. I think this was in Sydney in the early 1970s. My question is, what would be the purpose of this work?

If she was watching three channels at once, then probably the adverts that appealed to her and had more impact would get written more accurately....or something like that so that they knew if a 'campaign' was working.

Or for advertisers to get confirmation that they were getting the spots they paid for?

Or for advertisers to get confirmation that they were getting the spots they paid for? That seems plausible.

I think this was in Sydney in the early 1970s. Presumably Australian TV channels didn't all conspire to show their commercials at the same time (as seems to happen here whenever I go channel hopping during an ad break), as doing 3 at once would be rather difficult!

Maybe that's why she hated the job!
