Shirley singing 'Stormy Weather'.... This isn't a new find. this footage has always existed. BUT....as only this excerpt existed in the BFI National Archive (on 35mm), it was difficult to name the show it came from, or the date of that show. In fact, the BFI had never managed to do it! I managed to do that using tvbrain.info and some secondary online sources. What's great is that it's from ITV's 8th day of broadcasting, so it will be among the earliest pieces of existing footage from the channel.

It transpires - after consulting tvbrain.info and Genome - that this is in fact Shirley Bassey's first TV appearance.

1955? It must be her first TV. Blimey, well done in ID'ing this, Ray.

I would like to point out, that despite my love of all things Bassey, the fact I actually spotted this in the BFI Archive and then managed to work out what show it was from and the date was, essentially a complete fluke!!!! (and thank you).

I think flukes mainly come from a damned lot of hard work. More power to you.

I wonder did this originally come from the collection of Jack Hylton?
Jack Hylton who was head of AR variety in the early days was found to have a cache of early videotapes and films which were supposedly donated to the BFI after his death (a very long time ago). Technically I have heard they were very naive and amateur like productions and represented feeble competition to the rather slick ATV operation. However IIRC a few gems were among them including a 1959 end of year review and a Marty Wilde staged number on fault free clean videotape and also an ultra rare television appearance of George Formby on TR.

I am pretty certain it did. It was listed as a Jack Hylton Production, firstly and foremostly.

If the BFI are reading this, I'm at Southbank on 20th April.

There is another Bassey clip from an untitled ITV programme from the 1950's which I have not yet managed to identify the show it came from.
