Paul,
There's the obvious risk that idiots on the internet will attempt to contact the broadcaster. In making these comments, you've clearly balanced the risk of that with the likelihood nothing untoward will come of it? If I may, how long ago did you speak with this engineer?

Wouldn't be surprised if the Web of Fear 3 hoarder is already at 32000 feet and enjoying in-flight refreshments as we speak.

Hello DW Fans....
If noone's actually done it, I'm quite happy to contact the TV people in Iran.

tapes of marco polo does not sound likely. likely they would be films if they were there. Sorry about my vague posts. I generally met anything that has it's last known resting place in Iran, I'd feel pretty grim about, Doctor Who or otherwise.

Hello DW Fans.... If noone's actually done it, I'm quite happy to contact the TV people in Iran. That would be interesting Ray. How would you go about that? At least you have the credentials/track record of being an archivist and finding lost tv. Maybe we have film in our archives that would be of interest and value to them and a two way negotiation could take place. Please update us if you do contact them Ray

We shouldn’t send in the marines by helicopter.

We shouldn’t send in the marines by helicopter. One for the Signal Regiment, surely?

Surely if someone did see Doctor Who on a shelf in Tehran, then the odds are that it was one of the approximately 50 Hartnell's they aired from 1968 to 1970 - none of which are missing. And not two episodes of Marco Polo last seen in 1967.
One might say that the odds that it even is Marco Polo are 2 in 52 ... so 96% chance it's not Marco Polo ...

Knowing the history of that part of the world it wouldn’t surprise me if cans of film sat on a shelf for decades - like Nigeria.
