Hello folks,
I was reading the relevant Complete History book yesterday, and (forgive me I don't have the exact wording to hand) but in it Andrew Pixley stated that the copy of episode 1 from c.1976 was found on top of a pile of cans returned from Hong Kong (or words to that effect).
Does anyone know the source for that? I know that was the assumption before the Jos copy turned up with its HK markings, but I'm rather assuming that's now not thought to be the case!

Wiped! simply says that Sue Malden found it at Villiers in a batch that had just arrived back from overseas (no specific location noted).
Perhaps the phrasing in Complete History is incorporating the old perception, as you say, and putting 2 and 2 together that the batch might have been from Hong Kong. Though we know now that the HK episodes turned up in Jos.

i expect that at that time lots of cans were being returned from Austrailia and elsewhere, so any could be mixed up and placed ontop of piles before they were thrown in a skip, so the ones below may have been other episodes from HK and it was assumed that WOF 1 was also from there. Knowing how unwanted things are stored within establishments.

In his 1992 interview in DWB 104, Ian Levene says the pile of films that Sue located "had just come back from the Far East, just like the ones that came back recently from Hong Kong. [i.e. Tomb of the Cybermen]... On top of this pile Sue saw a can marked The Web of Fear episode one".
Some have taken his comment to mean that Web also came from HK, whereas Levene is clearly using HK only as an example of where films had previously come from.
Of course, even though the other cans in the pile may have indeed come from the "Far East", that doesn't mean the can sitting on the top did also. Levene says that the pile of films was in the process of being thrown out, so the separate Web film could have quite easily been plonked on the top, along with however many other unwanted films from the vault.

Just goes to show that there were more than one film print made for many episodes. Which of course makes me speculate about The Daleks Master Plan ?

It's a conflation of two bits of information. As Jon says, Ian has always insisted that Sue Malden found the print of Episode 1 in 1978 on the loading bay at BBC Enterprises and stated that it came back from the "Far East", which was then connected in some people's minds with his Hong Kong comment. Although we know that the episode was indeed found at Enterprises (which Sue confirms), we also know that Ian's attributed date is wrong, as the single episode also appears on the archive listing drawn up for Whose Doctor Who in November 1976, so it was obviously kicking around for some time. No. As Paul Vanezis explained in his interview with Richard Latto in 2013, it's now very likely that the print originated as part of the Australian return of episodes in 1975, which is also where Terry Burnett's prints of Airlock and The Underwater Menace #2 also came from. I don't think anyone is saying otherwise... or shouldn't be. There were lots of prints made for certain stories, but DMP apparently only had two, from what I recall. Our set, and the copies for Australia. Sadly though, as much as I want there to be more sets of DMP, there's very little wiggle room where there could be. :/ |

I mean, the copies, originally made for the UK. We should have had our own set used for the UK, no? Episode 2 was found and returned from within in the UK. Oh yeah, also, I should remind myself that not everyone is from the UK, here... I should probably make that more clear. Saying "ours" to an American or Frenchman wouldn't mean much. |

There wouldn't have been copies made for the UK. Enterprises produced the prints for overseas sale, not for domestic use. By that time, DMP had already been transmitted from the original videotapes. Enterprises would have had their set of master 16mm negatives though.
