Perhaps you were thinking of It's a Royal Knockout, I can't imagine anyone in their right mind repeating that one!

Referenced in the latest Private Eye www.private-eye.co.uk/Is there a reason it's became topical? I believe copies of the documentary appeared online a year or two ago?

No, screenshots that I saw trace it back no further than mid November 2020. It took a few months before someone uploaded it to youtube and then suddenly everyone noticed, but I'll agree that it was just a matter of time. People forget that private torrent websites still exist (I'm not suggesting they should).

Seems to be a lot of old chat following it that the royal family are shocked and embarrassed that it has surfaced again when they ' tried to ban it' But frankly I don't think they give a toss one way or the other Princess Anne at the time said something like "it was like watching monkeys in a zoo" and could not see any entertainment value as a TV programme....but of course long, long before Big Brother.

If it's banned then we must see it, of course.
Funny thing is, sometimes when "unaired show X" (or unrepeated in this case) finally gets out, it is stunningly normal.

It seems to work both ways with Dr Who, with some stories such as The Daemons not being a hyped by fans after being repeated, and conversely The Enemy of the World gaining a lot of credibility after being found.

Referenced in the latest Private Eye www.private-eye.co.uk/Is there a reason it's became topical? I believe copies of the documentary appeared online a year or two ago? A couple of weeks ago it was all over youtube, other video sites, filesharing sites, etc. See: Streisand Effect. Interestingly it was a 90-minute version not the original 105 min version. Maybe it was a version meant for overseas, as they often edit for timing etc? Does anyone know how long the BFI version was, as mentioned at the start of the thread?

Does anyone know how long the BFI version was, as mentioned at the start of the thread? Answering myself. It's still listed on the BFI page. 110 min. So it can't have leaked from there then.

Ah but based on screenshots from a private site, it started as a torrent, November 2020 - just wasn't noticed until two months later when someone put it on youtube. It was shown all over the Commonwealth, was it not?

Funny thing is, sometimes when "unaired show X" (or unrepeated in this case) finally gets out, it is stunningly normal. Wasn't that why this got locked away ... because it does show them as stunningly normal, taking away the mystique of the monarchy. Half the English-speaking world watched it originally, and there are viewing copies available in several countries. Now, where did the bits on the cutting room floor go? That would be interesting. Presumably incinerated ...

Presumably incinerated ... Yes, in this case, that is mentioned precisely as the possible reason, isn't it. Or at least, that is the only explanation at hand. As for viewing copies, well... I think someone compared lengths somewhere and concluded that this wasn't the BFI's.
