Went to MBW yesterday. In the Q&A they said the "Wheel In Space" mini-episode was a side-project arising from the "Macra Terror" animation, and would most likely be included as an extra on the "Macra Terror" DVD or blu-ray release. On another forum, someone said that Dick answered in the Q&A that it would be on the Macra release, but then he was then contradicted by Ann Marie Walsh who said "something like 'No it hasn’t been decided yet'. All sounded a bit suspicious the way she said it." So who knows Someone else commented that the end-credits of the Wheel in Space cutdown episode 1 indicated that the work was done for BBC Studios. With the various Wheel rumours and even the odd comment from Phil over the last 6 or so years, if I wasn't such a bitter cynic, I'd think that meant that episodes 2, 4, and 5 were recovered, if not already in the BBC's hands. Fortunately, I am a bitter cynic.

It wasn't Dick Fiddy who said it would probably be on the "Macra" release, it was one of the animators. Then the producer said something like "it's not yet been announced"; but I can't imagine they'd do anything else with it.

... but I can't imagine they'd do anything else with it. With rumours of both a Wheel DVD (containing what, one wonders) and the next animation after Macra being Fury (the story directly preceding this 10-minute cut-down Episode 1 of Wheel) - I can imagine other options. Still, what would posses BBC Studios to commission a cut-down of only 1 of the 4 missing Wheel episodes in the first place? I'm having problems thinking of a rational explanation, unless this is for a complete Wheel animation sometime in the future. Though the trend recently seems to be animating completely missing serials ... with Power and now Macra, and rumours of Fury floating around for months now ... it's enough of grow the heart of a grinch!

Apparently it was relatively cheap and easy to produce, because they used some of the 3D computer modelling work from "Macra Terror", along with the servo robot that'd been animated some years ago. Not sure who commissioned it; but I noticed there was a BFI logo on the end.

Fortunately, I am a bitter cynic. As the resident ‘wet blanket’ I can’t fault the logic. In terms of recoveries Snowmen and Wheel were last known in Nigeria - somewhere that’s proven fruitful in the past. PM, as confirmed by PV, promised more, unspecified, recoveries in the new year. When those are revealed we’ll know and, hopefully, also find out just how many places have been checked and can be crossed off the list. Some may recall how I successfully predicted Wheel as a candidate for animation as it was a big monster story with two surviving episodes and telesnaps. Let’s see what’s revealed in 2019 and update our thoughts then.

I *think* Wheel 1 has probably the most dialog-less action of any of the missing episodes, so would most benefit from animation. I'm scratching my head to see if I'm wrong about this. Evil part 4 is another contender. Perhaps Toymaker, though I'm less familiar with that story as I don't like it all that much.

The episode began with a beautifully realised colour version of the Troughton title sequence, which was an added bonus for me.

Well if there putting that much effort into a 10 minute project I will say that it is clearly for a future project. Why not animate all 6 episodes of "The Wheel in Space" and simply include the two existing episodes along with the interviews, photo galleries and other extras..
The same process can be done with "The Faceless Ones" and "The Evil of the Daleks"

This conjecture haa been going on awhile and the tin-foil in my hat keeps whispering... 'wasn't there a version of the omni-rumour: where all missing episodes had been recovered bar Wheel in Space and The Macra Terror'?

Yes I remember that part of the rumor but there were a few others that were supposedly still missing, I think "The Daleks Master Plan" and "The Space Pirates" were among the others that were not recovered in that version of the rumor.

Rob. That sounds about right... no Space Pirates and no DMP - with the exception that possibly there was also mention that the Feast of Steven was recovered? It's all so long ago! 😂

The Feast of Steven is the point you should stop listening to it. It's gone sadly.

It looked stunning: so I'm guessing the "Macra Terror" will be pretty special too. The animation was a quantum leap forward from previous animations, IMHO One thing though, didn't they say that something hadn't yet been announced/revealed? That there was one more project it might be related to, but they didn't name it because that project has yet to be announced?

The episode began with a beautifully realised colour version of the Troughton title sequence, which was an added bonus for me. That was a bit mindbendingly weird for me for the first few seconds as my initial gut reaction was "Why are they using a messed up version of the Pertwee opening?" But before the opening howlaround change it clicked in what they had done. It was fun to see the Troughton opening borrowing from the colour palette of Pertwee.

This conjecture haa been going on awhile and the tin-foil in my hat keeps whispering... 'wasn't there a version of the omni-rumour: where all missing episodes had been recovered bar Wheel in Space and The Macra Terror'? There were more flavours of that rumour than you can get at Baskin Robbins. I think you could literally propose an infinite number of random combinations of finds and track down someone posting about it in 2013.
