I've heard of the fan myth that William Hartnell was given a copy of Feast of Steven as a leaving present, which I presume is long debunked.

Any particular reason why this episode was not considered suitable for sale? Wouldn't there have been a chunk of storyline missing without it?

Any particular reason why this episode was not considered suitable for sale? Wouldn't there have been a chunk of storyline missing without it? It was a chunk of Christmas fluff that didn't have anything to do with the main story. It was designed so that the story could be sold as an 11-parter without the Christmas episode.

I don't know how familiar you are with the episode, but it has no relevance to the wider story and really could be considered its own standalone piece. There's a big combination of factors that doomed it, but the primary reason was that it was a "Christmas Special" which doomed it even though they could have simply cut the final scene and tried to sell it as a standalone (although with Sara Kingdom being there, that could have opened another can of worms).
The Christmas Specials have been a nightmare with foreign sales marketing today, never mind back in 1965.

I listened to the BBC CD release many years ago; but my memories of it are hazy to say the least!

In regards to 60s who, FoS is my least liked ep and I'm OK with it being non exstant.
Of the 97 audios and recons, it's the only one I skip. Given the option I'd gladly trade it with any other missing ep.

Any particular reason why this episode was not considered suitable for sale? Wouldn't there have been a chunk of storyline missing without it? It was set at Christmas and was made to be shown at Christmas, which would have made scheduling it problematic for foreign broadcasters: they could have shown season 3 at any time during the year, which meant Feast of Steven was played when it wasn't Christmas, or somehow carefully plan out their entire years schedule so that single episode fitted into a December slot, which no TV station would have attempted, given that they had all the other season 3 eps to schedule. TV stations even now avoid showing Christmas-themed programmes at any other time of the year, so these factors were likely taken into consideration for not including it in the foreign sale package.

I wonder if its causing some of the Nu Who Christmas specials to be skipped over now. If you think about it if you run Nu Who one show a week you would have 3 Christmas Shows in a years rime. That is why I preferred a Christmas special that was not Christmas Themed. For example "The End of Time" is set at Christmas but is not Christmas Themed.

By the sounds of things they've gone full on with the New Year thing.

Of course, the following week, in ‘Volcano’, we see New Year celebrations in Trafalgar Square. Though the Doctor and his companions don’t recognise them as that and the Doctor refers to the celebrations he witnessed after the ‘Relief of Mafeking’.
