I love Dad's Army ... (but) ... if we cannot find the original recordings then I say NO

What a terrible idea. A huge part of the appeal of the original was the actors' performances. As the movie showed, nobody can be Mainwaring like Arthur Lowe, nobody could be Wilson like John Le Mesurier could etc.

To me, assuming that none of the missing episodes are recovered, animation like A Stripe for Frazer but using the radio soundtracks if no TV audio exists would be the way forward

I'm not really in favour of this because it was so based on the particular characters and actors. They should remake all the missing 1960s Doctor Whos instead.

Dad's Army is ingrained in our culture. That set of actors caught lightning in a bottle. It must be the most repeated comedy series ever, it's been on for 50 years! In my opinion, no other actor, whatever their credentials could capture the spirit of the show. A couple of years ago, the BBC remade old comedy shows. I found most of them unwatchable, I lasted about 5 minutes into the Steptoe episode. That proved to me it's not just about the script, it's the actors that bring the meat. Dads Army was perfection in it's casting.

I don't see how remakes of missing Dads Army episodes could possibly work. Arthur Lowe was the main character as Mainwaring but he was backed up by a stellar cast who each mastered their characters to perfection.

Alf Garnett was a man at odds with a changing world. He was angry about it and wanted the 'good old days' back. Everything made him angry and that was the real focus of the show. Simon Day's interpretation was of someone who was tired and so it missed the point. And that would happen with Dads Army I think

What a wretched idea. Reggie Perrin, anyone?
Remakes are only ever justified, surely, if the original was flawed in some way. For example, I would argue that we still await a definitive onscreen depiction of HHGG - the 1981 Alan Bell production got a lot right, but was hamstrung by the SFX limitations of the day and some glacially slow pacing (the Bang Bang/Shooty scene being the worst example of this), while the film was IMO almost unwatchable. But Dad's Army? These remakes will only ever get compared to the surviving episodes, and be found wanting.

We’ve just watched the remakes of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Walker & A Stripe for Frazer on Gold. Much to my surprise I really enjoyed every moment. The casting was excellent, and was made with genuine affection for the series. The live studio audience really helped. 10/10.

The way the main actors were playing someone acting as someone else reminded me, in a way of The Comic Strip Presents when they did the GLC & the Miners Strike one, for example Peter Richardson playing Lee Van Cleef playing Tony Benn. I think they did a more faithful job though 😂😂😂😂.

Just watched the third episode, a weaker plot, lots of slapstick nothing like as good as the other two, no fault of the actors.
