Boy Meets Girls (1959)

Boy Meets Girls was an ABC Television Network Production, created by Jack Good and replacing his groundbreaking pop show, Oh Boy! (1958) which had finished a few months earlier. Most episodes were broadcast live each week from ABC's Manchester Studios.

The boy in the title is presenter Marty Wilde, with the girls being The Vernons Girls. 20-year old Marty had been secretly engaged to 18-year old Joyce Baker, one of The Vernons Girls, a few months before the show aired. They got married in December 1959 and a few months later were expecting their first child, Kim (born November 1960), who was, of course, equally successful in the pop world.

Assuming that all 26 episodes were recorded onto videotape, it's a real shame that no tele-recordings were made, either during the broadcasts or before the tapes were wiped. At least some footage survives from Oh Boy! but nothing from the follow-ups Boy Meets Girls or Wham!! (1960).

The show is listed in Issues 201-226 of TV Times magazine, with two-page articles related to the series appearing in Issues 204 and 221 (I'll reproduce those later). It also made the front cover of Issue 211:

Here's the first article about Boy Meets Girls, printed in the TV Times, dated September 25, 1959:

The eyebrows shot up. "Me? Square?" Producer Jack Good spluttered indignantly at the idea. Then he added: "Well, perhaps physically. But that’s as far as it goes."
Jack, the man who looks more like the Oxford undergraduate he once was than the TV producer he is now, was talking about ABC’s Boy Meets Girls.
He beamed and said: "You might say the show’s gone square though. Comparatively, that is."
Comparatively, because this 28-year-old veteran of two teenage rock'n'roll TV successes has a reputation for blasting the viewers almost out of their seats.
But that’s finished. The bounce of Jack’s last series, Oh Boy!, has been toned down. So much so, that some are saying that Jack is going square.
Jack explained: "It’s not true, of course. Rock'n'roll is not as overwhelming as it was. But there is nothing sudden about the change.
"Popular music is tending to become more melodic and less frantic. The arrangements are sweeter and the whole atmosphere is different — like the new show.
"Oh Boy! taught me that there is no substitute for personality in entertainment. The high spots always came when an artist got something of himself across.
The attack can become just as boring as the slow, dragging pace. We shall use an occasional ‘wild’ number, but the accent is on friendliness and the programme is aimed at a wider audience.
"We are out to capture the elder brothers and sisters of the teenagers. And the mums and dads, too.
"I have never been a rock'n'roll producer. I have been a producer of excitement. It’s not the music that counts, it's the thrill."
Giving viewers the thrills and excitement are some of the old favourites from Oh Boy! Among them is petite South African organist Cherry Wainer and her cousin, drummer Don Storer; sax star Red Price; the Vernons Girls from Liverpool; and Marty Wilde, the show’s compere.
Twenty-four-year-old Cherry is not worried about the soft-pedal technique. "It's quite a change of course," she said, "but I like all kinds of music and I'm enjoying every minute of it."
Said cousin Don: "This quieter atmosphere gives us a better chance to get a number over."
Don and Cherry — they were last in South Africa almost two years ago — both love England. "Apart from the weather," said 30-year-old Don. "I know you are all blowing your tops about this summer you’ve just had, but really it was no better than are many winters in Durban."
Producer Good is bringing into the programme guest artists and new stars from America and the Continent.
On a recent two-and-a-half month tour of Europe he found Little Tony and His Brothers. They will be making their second appearance in the show tomorrow (September 26).
Little Tony is 18. He sings in English but he does not yet speak it fluently.
His guitar-playing brothers, Enrico, 16, and Alberto, 21, are also up against the language difficulty. But when I met them, all three were talking excitedly to British rock'n'roller Terry Dene. He speaks no Italian, but he discovered that the language of rock'n'roll is international. Little Tony took to rock'n'rolling a year ago and already has many discs to his credit. He has won top prizes in rock'n'roll festivals, too.
When he became interested in it he took English rock'n'roll records to an elderly English language teacher to learn them parrot-fashion. It has paid off handsomely.
Many people think he is Italian. But though he lives in Rome he comes from the tiny, mountain-top Republic of San Marino.
And he proudly produces his Roman identity card, which describes him as a "foreigner" to prove it.
The friendly, family atmosphere of the show is being exploited in a glamorous way — with the 16 Vernons Girls.
The group — all are aged between 17 and 25 — has two understudies. They attend rehearsals and learn the routines so that if a girl falls ill or leaves to get married there is always a replacement available.
"The Vernons are the first group who have not been presented as girls who look alike and dress alike," said Jack Good.
"They are a nice bunch of kids; there is nothing of the stainless-steel glitter of the ordinary show girl about them. They are happy and friendly.
"After Oh Boy! we decided that if the public knew more about them they would go for them in a big way."
Jack has in mind chiefly viewing mothers and their sons. He would like the mothers to regard the girls as their daughters and the sons to regard them as their sisters.
Dance director Leslie Cooper said: "The girls are being featured more in the new show than they were in Oh Boy! and we think it will serve to increase their popularity."
The girls get plenty of fan mail. And 23-year old Margaret Stredder, who wears spectacles, gets more than any of them.
Silver-Blonde Margaret has seven pairs of glasses (one for each day of the week) and a regular boyfriend.
But the boy the girls "dig" the most is 19-year-old Marty Wilde, star of the show. He has a taste for fast cars as well as fast music.
’Marty, owner of a sports car, told me: "I don’t get much time for motoring these days. I’m far too busy."
The new role of compere? Marty thinks it’s terrific. "I’m very excited about it. It’s the biggest break for me so far and I hope this new show is going to be a great success."
Marty is not worried that the general tone-down will lose him some of his fans. "I think I shall gain 10 new fans for every one I may lose. This treatment of the programme is just what teenagers want."
Twenty-year-old Terry Dene, who shares Marty’s interest in speed (he has a motor-cycle), agreed.
"I have been doing more ballads than rock'n'roll numbers and I have found that they have gone down better," said Terry. "1 don’t think people want to be knocked out of their seats any more.
"I wouldn’t say that rock is dying, but there is a swing towards the quieter numbers."
Quiet, sweet, friendly. That’s Boy Meets Girls. It’s not the mixture as before, but it’s the formula that should give Jack Good his hat-trick of TV hits.

A few more additions / notes on guests scheduled, mostly from the pages of NME -
Joe Brown was in the house band from the first episode - he was fired and reinstated possibly on September 18th.
Johnny Cash tele-recorded his second appearance (originally pencilled in for 31st October broadcast) which seems to have been aired on 10 October. The Sept 18th recording for this episode may well have been the occasion where Joe Brown recalled - "All I had to do was go dink, donk while Johnny sang, 'How high's the water, Momma?'" So, halfway through the second verse, I try a little do-wing dinga ding among the dink donks. And Cash stops singing. 'Hold it,' he says, and there's this almighty hush.Slowly he turns until his eyes alight on me. 'Joe,' he drawls, 'thar'll be no pickin' thar.'?" Brown was fired at the end of the day. Johnny Cash saw him sitting alone and devastated and asked what was wrong and Brown told him he'd been fired because of this. Cash got him his job back and when he returned to America, sent Brown some cowboy boots.

Oct 10 - this was probably the Johnny Cash episode referred to above, tele-recorded on Sept 18th.
Oct 31 - this show was tele-recorded on Oct 16th. NME has Mort Shuman and Doc Pomus appearing (possibly not in a performance, just an interview?) and notes that a future edition will be built around their songs.
Nov 21 - this episode was prob. tele-recorded on the 13th November.
December 5 - tele-recorded 27th November ? Joyce Wilde came out of the Vernons Girls to be introduced by Marty Wilde. May have sang a song with him ?

Without access to show scripts or recordings, it's hard to be accurate. Guests were sometimes scheduled/announced but moved or cancelled and as Simon noted, TV Times does not always carry a full cast list.. Many of the American guests taped an additional show for later broadcast, often the day before their first broadcast live appearance. It's not clear whether they'd perform just their songs or if a whole episode was recorded in one go but I get the impression that entire episodes were recorded rather than individual guest spots.
At a rough guess I’d estimate that I know of at least a couple of hours existing in audio form. Rockstar Records brilliant Boy Meets Girls TV Shows Vol. 1 features the complete shows from Jan 16th and 23rd as well as tracks by Ronnie Hawkins and Gene Vincent and Johnny Cash. Where’s Vol. 2 chaps ??
Collectors tapes feature many additional performances and I know of at least one other show that exists complete as off air audio. Rockstar Records have also released several performances by Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. I’d certainly recommend chasing up these Rockstar Records releases.
I’ve not conducted a full nerdy analysis of all the Boy Meets Girls recordings but it could be possible (SPECULATION) that several hours (maybe as many as 5 or 6  ??) exist in total which equates to nearly half the episodes. Rockstar Records were planning on releasing a volume 2 and it would be very interesting to know what other tapes they and others have that have not been issued at the present time. That they were able to include a track by Cash and Hawkins suggests they have at least two more shows and there are more from Cochran and Vincent's episodes too.
As mentioned elsewhere, I read in one of Jack Good's Disc Weekly columns that the entire series was destroyed within months of broadcast - Good states he was told this by ABC TV when he asked about re-showing some of the episodes featuring Eddie Cochran. The audio released by Rockstar Records was kept by engineer "Big" Ron Parker who worked on the show. Big hand for big Ron......
While episodes of Oh Boy were shown in the States (re-edited to feature Brenda Lee as host ?) and may be lying around gathering dust (??), it is not thought that either Boy Meets Girls or Wham!! were shown elsewhere making recoveries highly unlikely.

Is there a recipe for stardom? Jack Good, producer of ABC's Boy Meets Girls, believes there is. Here Good, who has helped and guided many of today's top 'pop' personalities, elaborates the theme. Among the stars Good has handled are Cliff Richard, voted best male vocalist of the year by Cool for Cats, Adam Faith, Little Tony, Terry Dene, Cuddly Dudley and The Dallas Boys.

What makes a star? Two words answer the question — the public. For a man can be a genius in any field of art or entertainment but he will never be a star unless the public takes him to their heart. There is no such thing as an unrecognised star.
Just as you can be a genius without being a star, you can be a star without being a genius. Talent is not everything. A small amount of talent is necessary, of course, just to get going. From then on it is personality that counts.
There have been lots of better actors than Rudolph Valentino and Errol Flynn, but they have not made half as much impact on the public.
The fact that talent alone does make not a star explains why there are no star composers or painters. For composing and painting reveal nothing beyond the mans' talent.
Star quality, on the other hand, depends on the public seeing the artist as a person that means something to them.
What he does becomes secondary to what he is.
A star is part of the life of his public. The scene outside the church when Marty Wilde married Vernons Girl Joyce Baker is an illustration.
The top performers influence the public so much that when one dies it seems like a personal loss to millions of people who have never even met him.
What makes the public like this? First, a star needs to be given the top treatment in his profession — star billing, a starring role, star publicity.
In fact, publicity is one of the most important factors in modern show business.
Television shows like Oh, Boy! or Boy Meets Girls may help to put Marty Wilde or Cliff Richard on the map. But teams of full-time publicity men help to keep their names in front of the public because although the public set the final seal on stardom, the “package" has to have the right wrapping.
The public do not take a girl like Audrey Hepburn from the chorus line and make her a star. Someone in the business has to discover her, glamorise her name, give her a big part and tell the public: "Here is your new star." It is then that the public decide to accept — or not.
This is where personality comes in. American show business bosses do their best to build an artist into a star by using every means money can buy. A record company in the US recently spent £35,000 promoting the name of a new disc artist. At the moment it looks as though the money has been wasted. For, in my view, you cannot buy stardom.
In the end, it is personality that counts ... a personality that the public accept without question, just as they are now accepting guitarist-singer Joe Brown, who started off as one of the band in Boy Meets Girls but who now promises to be one of the new stars of 1960. Why? Simply because he has that certain something — a something that cannot be analysed.
The personalities of the stars are as varied as any other professional group, even in the restricted rock'n'roll field.
For comparisons, take Tommy Steele, Adam Faith and Marty Wilde.
All are different. But all have one thing in common, and it is the secret to stardom. That secret is authority. Complete and unquestionable. When they perform, they command attention.
This is the factor that links Maria Callas with Sir Laurence Olivier.
It is this quality of authority which gives the clue to what happens when a star falls. And as long as they do not think about what makes them stars they are all right.
As soon as they begin to question the source of their success they are in trouble. They try too hard to please. The public become their bogey.
It is just like running down an escalator. It’s easy if you don’t concentrate, but when you begin to wonder how you managed it, you are likely to trip and fall.
All too often a star begins to worry about what the public sees in him. He builds up a false picture of what is expected of him — and then tries to live up to these expectations.
It is then that a star ceases to be "big" and changes back into an ordinary person like you and me.

Umm...on reading that the entire series was destroyed months later....i bet (and if i may say this) Jack was pissed off (Sorry)....so on who`s orders were they trashed?...probably so 80+year old boss who hated rock`n`roll...

In September 1960 Jack Good tells readers of Disc that the tapes of the show have already been destroyed "because of the high cost of storage", however ABC engineer Ron Parker had made high quality audio recordings, several of which have been released by United Artists and Rockstar Records.

In an earlier Disc piece Good explained that half the shows were live and half pre-recorded.

"As the follow-up to "Oh Boy!", much was expected of "Boy Meets Girls" when it began its 26 episode run on 12th September 1959. Producer Jack Good had been the driving force behind the BBC's pivotal 1957 "yoof" programme "Six-Five Special" but the BBC had refused to allow Good to realise his original plan which was to create Britain's first fast-paced rock 'n' roll show. The BBC preferred a magazine-style format and although the show was a groundbreaking attempt for the time, Good and director Rita Gillespie quit when it became clear that the show was becoming increasingly watered down. Pitching his idea to independent television company ABC, Good was allowed to prep two editions of his fast-paced rock 'n' roll show idea for broadcast in June 1958. Utilising Rita Gillespie and "Six-Five Special" scriptwriter Trevor Peacock, Good explained "We want to have the fastest show on TV and we'll try out new ideas like getting a full choir to sing rock 'n' roll. It'll be an audience show and we'll make it 100 per cent for teenagers. No catering for anyone else ! "

MIGHTY GOOD Is the first comprehensive look at Jack Good's ABC Television series 'Boy Meets Girls' which was broadcast from September 12th 1959 to March 5th 1960. Hosted by Marty Wilde and featuring guests such as Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Billy Fury, Johnny Cash and Ronnie Hawkins, ABC - TV chose to wipe the entire series within weeks of transmission - but all is not lost.

Show engineer Ron Parker preserved some on-set audio recordings while unknown members of the viewing audience recorded further segments for prosperity and its all presented here for your listening pleasure. Considering that nothing from the show is supposed to exist, we hope you will agree that this 3-CD set provides a great insight into one of the classic 'lost' pop television shows and much of the music contained herein is indeed, MIGHTY GOOD....

On 12th September 1959, ABC TV in the UK launched it’s follow up to Jack Good’s legendary pop tv series “Oh Boy!”. With Good once more in charge of production duties and Marty Wilde installed as compere, “Boy Meets Girls” had a more sedate presentation style compared to the frantic pacing of “Oh Boy!” but Good switched things around and by the end of the show’s run in March 1960, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Ronnie Hawkins and Billy Fury had all delivered electrifying performances leaving fond memories of the show. Tragically, six weeks after the series ended, Cochran was killed in a car crash and weeks later, hoping to re-broadcast his appearances in tribute, Jack Good discovered that ABC had wiped every single episode of “Boy Meets Girls”.

Fortunately, home tapers had been preserving music history and off air recordings of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent were released early on in the Rockstar Records catalogue.

Decades later, on set audio recordings made by ABC TV engineer Ron Parker of Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent were located and in 2013, Rockstar Records released a CD taken from Ron’s tapes.
“Boy Meets Girls TV Shows Vol. 1” also featured host Marty Wilde, Ronnie Hawkins, Lyn Cornell, The Vernons Girls and Johnny Cash as well as singer Johnny Gentle who, shortly after his “Boy Meets Girls” appearances, recruited a Liverpudlian band called The Silver Beetles for a May 1960 tour of Scotland. I wonder what happened to them….

Now it’s 2024 and Rockstar Records is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary. Naturally it was decided that something mighty good ought to be issued for such a prestigious occasion and so here is “Mighty Good”, a 3 CD archeological dig that presents every surviving second of audio from Jack Good’s series “Boy Meets Girls”.
This set features four complete episodes of “Boy Meets Girls” alongside excerpts from several other episodes. In addition to classic “must hear” sets by Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent, you will hear Johnny Cash (in his first UK TV appearance) backed by Joe Brown and The Firing Squad, the “Italian Elvis” Little Tony, the versatile Marty Wilde, Billy Fury, Michael Cox, Adam Faith, Ronnie Hawkins, Jess Conrad and many others in performances which for the most part have not been heard since transmission in 1959 and 1960.
The sleeve notes trace the development of the show and where possible, details for each episode have been provided, a task made difficult due to the scripts meeting the same fate as the TV episodes themselves.
Jack Good was a pivotal force in the pre-Beatle years of British popular music. His influence on Cliff Richard, Marty Wilde, Billy Fury and Johnny Kidd was essential to their success and his TV series (“6.5 Special”, “Oh Boy!”, “Boy Meets Girls” and “Wham!!”) were critical to the development of pop music TV in the UK - from “Ready Steady Go” all the way through to “The Tube”.
British radio and TV archival practice (ie. throw it in the bin) has deprived original viewers and future generations of the chance to check out the mighty Good’s work but “Boy Meets Girls” has now, in part, been rescued from archival oblivion.
Rockstar Records proudly presents “Mighty Good”. We think you’ll find that it’s rather good !

Looks like you have done some sterling work on this most comprehensive compilation Ash so well done.

I have some encouraging news to impart regarding my own long running 'Oh Boy!' project you will be pleased to hear. I finally have clearances for two of my three documentaries with a distributor on board too... so both should be seeing the light of day in the next few months.I will start a new thread on this soon to give you more detail.
