Does anyone have any information about this BBC programme please?
Is it likely that the BBC holds anything of this programme, or does anyone know of any clip existing from it, just to give us a flavour of what the programme was like please
Here's a start...
By 1961 Alan Freeman had transferred to the BBC Light Programme with his Records Around Five show, introducing his signature tune, ‘At The Sign Of The Swinging Cymbal’. During September of the same year he introduced Pick Of The Pops, initially as part of a Saturday evening show entitled Trad Tavern, before the slot became a permanent show the following year. Freeman presented this well-loved programme until 1972.

March 31st 1962 A 15 min spot from an Acker Bilk Hamburg concert was to be broadcast on Trad Tavern the 3rd last show of that current series. Chris Barber is on the same bill (source:(NME 9/2/62)

Chris Barber is quoted in Pete Frame's book "The Restless Generation" about his appearances on 'Trad Tavern' - "I insisted on having Alexis Korner sing a couple of R&B numbers, as he did during our set. I had a lot of trouble with the producer, who felt it didn't represent what he understood to be 'trad', - but we got away with it for a while."
Pete Frame also quotes a memo written at the time by Terry Henebery the producer of 'Trad Tavern' (after it had been suggested by "some higher-up" that Barber be given a series of his own) - "I feel there is little to be gained by offering Chris Barber a series. His attitude towards radio is 'I play as I please'. This is acceptable for the occasional 'Jazz Club' outlet but for a regular weekly placing, it would be a bad thing. In any case, nine times out of ten, Mr CB puts on a prima donna act, which doesn't make for a smooth-running show- like ulcersville! Important also is the fact that there are now other bands of a comparable standard." (Pete Frame adds - "Show me one")
