Watching the wonderful Michael Palin tribute recently on BBC2 when I noticed copious amounts of clips being shown of 'NOW!'. A 1965 Pop/comedy show presented by Palin for BBC BRISTOL/WALES IN THE WEST. He mentions that Tom Jones was a regular and that Eric Clapton was on most weeks. Is this a previously believed wiped show or is it well documented?

According to Lost Shows all 32 episodes of "Now!" as broadcast on TWW (ITV) are lost - TV Brain mentions that a selection of film sequences exist.

NME dated 10th December 1965
Jones, Proby for 'NOW'
Tom Jones has been booked for the first edition of TWW's pop series "NOW" on December 22nd. . Already filmed for the second edition (29th) are P.J.Proby, The Toys, The Kinks and Brian Poole and The Tremeloes.
The series, which replaces "Discs A Go Go" has been created by journalist Michael Wale and his script writing partner Joe Steeples.
In 1966 Michael Palin and his new wife Helen Gibbins interrupted their honeymoon to host the show...there is a picture of them on the show on page 99 of The Pythons Autobiography book standing beside Manfred Mann,Pete and Dud and Paul Jones.
Also on page 91 of The Pythons Autobiography book there are comments from Michael about the show....he mentions the groups (Them and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers etc) and that he never told his parents about the show and they could'nt see it anyway as they lived in Sheffield)
The "NOW" segment starts at 8mins 27 secs...

About 10 years ago there was a history of TWW shown on ITV.
It showed the Now! sequences which were in the Michael Palin tribute.
Sadly that's all that's left.
From memory we have:
the opening titles. Now written in glitter on some people's bellies!
Michael going round a glass(?)factory with loads of metal pipes to the sound of the Beatles Nowhere man
Michael doing a clown mime
Michael playing a piano whilst it is being smashed up by Arthur Mullard (remember him!)
He could only do the show after a couple of pints of Guinness in a local pub, as he was so nervous!

The NME dated 29th April 1966 mentioned that Tom Jones would judge the finalists in a talent contest which had been launched by the show NME Picture of Arthur Mullard clowning about on John Steels' drums when the Animals were on the show on the 18th Feb 1966 is that John steel with his fingers in his ears? Arthur Mullard seems to be wearing a Moroccan costume and a Fez?..... Maybe to do with a sketch he was in? sorry for the quality of the picture but I can't make it any clearer. The NME was just printed on cheapish quality paper anyway.

Thank you all but without sounding thick what would have been the reason behind keeping those Michael clips only? If they were kept after his first wave of success with Python then the programmes would have existed into the 70's and then wiped after those surviving clips were saved. Is that what happened?

I'm guessing the 32 episodes of NOW! were all broadcast live using filmed inserts, the same as early TOTP and other programmes of that era. I doubt they were "wiped" - it's far more likely they were never recorded in the first place! Any surviving "clips" would be inserts that were filmed beforehand. Studio inserts of pre-recorded bands were probably done on videotape and recorded over after broadcast, hence no studio footage, whereas location filming - and the opening titles - would be on 16mm which would explain why that's all that survives...

The article below is re-printed courtesy of Keith Badman. It's taken from page 48 of Keith & Terry Rawlings book "Quite Naturally" the Small Faces... N.B. Although the article mentions "Discs A Go Go" Keith suspects the programme had two titles at one time so for the sake of this thread regard the programme as "NOW"
