I found this at the on-line search db: resources.scottishtv.co.uk/content/default.asp?page=s1_1_4 17/04/1980 title - HOW - category OTHER tape ref: BL16504 - could this be a left-over VT of Southern, is it missing? I'm sure most of "HOW" has been decimated. For God's sake don't tell SMG/STV, once they realise its not theirs they might skip it!

dont know if it the same one Dubs, but 'how' was revived a few years back by Scottish TV (i think?)
I believe it had Carol Vorderman instead of dear old Bunty James.
dont think it lasted long?

Actually, How 2 is still going, with Fred Dinenage and Gaz 'Gareth Jones' Top, although the female presenter post is a bit like that of the dummer in Spinal Tap - it keeps on changing! (it's Gail McKenna at the moment, I think)
It's only got to last another three years then it's the 40th anniversary of How!
How 2 did some kind of anniversary thing a few years back which featured clips from an old edition of How - could this be the one that resides in the STV archive?

It's listed on the site as recording date: 17/4/80
Now given that STV didn't produce "How" at that time - and indeed not tll years later - could it be a copy of a Southern ep to look at whilst getting the format right for "HOW 2"?

i suppose the next step is to find some tv listing magazines and see if 'How' was transmitted the same time in the Scottish region s as other regions? They may have recorded it off the network for a future showing, hence they have their own copy.

Don't think How 2 is made by STV. Isn't it either Thames or Meridian?

Originally TVS, but STV took it over when TVS lost their franchise.
I repeat my theory that it's probably the one they took clips from for an edition of 'How 2' where they looked back at the original series - I have that particular 'How 2' on tape somewhere. I imagine it was probably a thirtieth anniversary thing from 1996.

Does any of the original 'How' still exist? I recorded a complete program in Eire a few years back.

Yes, a few definitely do from the mid-to-late Seventies, but nothing from its first ten years or so. I think a 1975 episode is the earliest surviving one.

Just to add, ITVs 'extraordinary' series circa 79-80 showed clips from collection of someone whose hobby was to regularly film home movies. This included the titles of a 1960s 'How' then shots of (another) John Miller with a yoyo. No exact date but obviously 66-69. The former is likely to exist hence the clip I would think, which would be its only form in an official archive.

I do think i've seen a b/w How clip in the past sometime myself too, although virtually all of the ones that usually turn up seem to be later colour ones. Anyone know exactly how many are still around in the Southern archive?

When did How! start.
I thought it was mid-seventies, but it appears I am wrong about that.
