I guess the moral of the story is - All you guys out there who have hoards of vhs/beatmax tapes with rare recordings that never get shown on TV anymore - make plans now in your will as to what your wife should do with them!

Many of the later tapes 76 onwards would have had missing/wiped material on them, this is a real shame and happens quite a lot when a 'collector' passes away.
In regard of the 500th, yes it's incomplete and has been around for quite a while, not only with collectors but also for sale on various sites for well over a year.

What a monumental waste of time and money it was for him in the end, think of how much he must have spent on tape etc not to mention time, for his wife to dump the lot

Let's be thankful that a lot of the TOTPs that Ken recorded are safe.
When I browsed the list of non-TOTP tapes (online), I only spotted on non-TOTP wiped episode - a Saturday Night at the Mill. That episode is partly online now.

Are we sure that any more TOTPs have been saved? if so can we guess which ones going by his list?

Interestingly enough according to a quote from 2011 on the old Popscene forum Chris from Kal was being a bit scathing about what was actually held. Do we know for sure that everything else supposedly junked was actually in their possession?
This is a direct lift from the Popscene forum and was posted by Kevin Mulrennen on 17/03/2011.
Here's Chris from Kal's view. The bloke is an expert so knows what he's talking about. You may have seen him in the Bob Monkhouse stuff recently.
Chris says on missing eps:
Can we please stop dredging up this old PVL clap-trap time and again?
Kal have had discussions with individuals that claim to represent PVL.
They have failed to provide us with a list of anything definitive, failed to show us any clips, lied about the name used to contact us, claimed that they only hold clips of missing material (not whole shows) now copied onto Betacam SP (a modern format that anyone could access so it would be easy to verify).
We broke off contact with them because of various spurious claims including my discovery that my so-called contact was using a false name to talk to me lol.
I am happy to talk to Ken direct about this collection. The BBC were also interested in talking direct to Ken but £20,000 is a lot for a small amount of missing material in non-broadcast quality (bw I was told, in the main off reel to reel and umatic sources).
Perhaps there are some real gems in this collection, but none of us are going to see it again unless you want to give £20,000 to a third party fixer. Do you? I don't lol.

Are these rare? Just that they supposedly appeared on youtube "for about 5 minutes" to prove they existed, then deleted again. I don't collect TOTP so have no idea if they're anything special.
Mungo Jerry - Alright Alright Alright (TOTP 1973.07.06) Suzi Quatro - 48 Crash (TOTP 1973.07.20) Geordie - Electric Lady (TOTP 1973.08.17) Barry Blue - (Dancing) On A Saturday Night (TOTP 1973.08.24) David Essex - Rock On (TOTP 1973.08.31)

In time they will be all shown by KAL in their excellent music events, as to the BBC showing them, that's another matter. Youtube posts that are there for "5 minutes" serve no purpose except it probably amuses the poster saying look what I've got.

There are several apps and addons that can be used to capture video content from youtube, for example: addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/I am not for a second suggesting that anyone even consider doing anything that is copyright violation or illegal, but if everyone has something along these lines installed, when one of these videos surfaces and disappears half an hour later we will have a copy safely stashed. It is common sense really. I have seen people post about this a few times and you don't have to be remotely tech savy to use it!

A bit off subject....a well-known archive in the US were looking for footage.
I found some of what they were looking for on youtube....
I emailed, got a reply back and the chap there said that he was unsure if they could copy the footage for legal reasons (as they were sure the owner of the film wouldn't send it back).
I was a little bit amazed and replied that if they wouldn't I would, and I'd send it to them.
In the end they did copy it.
Kind of like the Truman Show....

Does anyone with a bit more knowledge of the recovery know if the performance of The Man Who Stole the World by Lulu that was reputedly in the PVL has survived?

I guess had he just passed on his collection to Kal, then it would have made national news, and he could have cashed in on public speaking and being a talking head on 101 BBC 4 doccumntaries! what a waste

Does anyone with a bit more knowledge of the recovery know if the performance of The Man Who Stole the World by Lulu that was reputedly in the PVL has survived? Well someone has it (or at least a fragment of it): Two performances of this song by Lulu have survived. One is in colour, the other taped in monochrome. That latter one, from a Johnnie Walker edition, if memory serves, has a very awkward bass note in it in the second verse, backing by the TOTP Orchestra, a rare slip-up. Lulu sings live, which she didn't always do (an example being the appalling song 'The Man With the Golden Gun', believed to be the worst-selling Bond theme ever, you know....). It's possible that on one of the versions Bowie MIGHT have been doing backing vocals off-screen (rumours are he showed up to the studio, but only to watch proceedings....).
