Well, it's good to be proved wrong. I did watch it aged 3 first time around but can't remember much about it TBH, I find telesnap recons hard work and hadn't tried to watch the Power one. As you probably remember from previous rants Ive always been suspicious of "New Doctor 1st serials", I never rated Spearhead from Space & as for Robot, arrgh it's truly awful. So it was with some trepidation that I sat down and watched the Animated Power. Well, yes Pat was doing the (slightly irritating and often copied) "I'm in a new body and it's not working properly" thing, and fair play the hat was a step too far, but what a superb, strong story, really dark, Pat was working his way into the character slowly and clowning about a bit too much, but I have to say it was brilliant, definitely one of the great serials, the human characters showed all degrees of the human condition, I thought that the depth of characterisation was excellent and the Daleks were at their scheming nastiest. It had it all. A six parter WITH NO PADDING!! (& a hot villain - Janley of course). Now for the animation. The Daleks and sets were brilliant, pretty well as good as the real version, the animation of the cast was OK but their movement was pretty wooden and the limited facial expressions a bit of a let down to be honest. I thought I was going to go for the colour version, but I very soon realised that I found it too vivid & contrary to my thoughts before, I preferred the black and white, and watched it from episode 2. As for the sound track, they've performed a miracle, the quality is superb. Let's hope a) There's an entirely unexpected recovery of more of this superb serial and b) The animation attracts the attention of someone with serious money who loves the story & wants to do a top notch animation / CGI remake. Roll on animated Evil!

I totally agree - the cleanup of the audio plus is awesome.
General comment: please remember what the representative of the company said on this site a few months ago: the problem wasn't money; it was time. They proposed 9 months; they were told 6 months; and they probably knew that 12 months would have been preferable.
For some inexplicable reasons, media companies believe that we software developers have magic wands lying around to get these things up and running with super-idealised timelines and impossible deadlines. Thus, I would hope that they would give the developers TIME as well as money.
I was very pleased that the original telesnap reconstructions with the narration from Anneke Wills were on the DVD.

While I thought at some points the animators could have had another week to fix some of the stranger movements in the animation, it was mostly excellent. Not quite as amazing as the Moonbase animation, but not quite as awkward as Reign of Terror either.

The way the heads just sort of floated around with wide, dead eyes. *shudder*

Not quite as amazing as the Moonbase animation, but not quite as awkward as Reign of Terror either. Oh Reign was an odd one! Sometimes I couldn't work out who I was supposed to be looking at! And how much did they cut quickly from one person to another?! We know that classic Who didn't chop and change like that! My least favourite animation. Power was done very well, hope it sold well enough to make them consider doing others! MJ

Seriously, whenever anyone asks about the animations, I'll always recommend Moonbase, Invasion, then Power. After that, it goes down to Tenth Planet, Ice Warriors, and DEFINITELY Reign last.

Lets no forget that we are lucky enough to be in a position where we can at least rank the animations from best to worst. Who would have thought 10 years ago we would have an opportunity to do so

Lets no forget that we are lucky enough to be in a position where we can at least rank the animations from best to worst. Who would have thought 10 years ago we would have an opportunity to do so If you really think about this, making these animations from the telesnaps and available film is much harder than you think. Think of all the things that have to be just right for these to work: - The animation of living things must work in the gross movement (e.g., walking) and fine movement (e.g., eyes). - The animation of inanimate objects must be maintained correctly. - The animation of sounds must match the objects, method of contact, etc. - The animation must match the telesnaps rather than be done completely from scratch. - The animation must match the memories of those who saw the originals. You have to be good at art, physics, and biomechanics just for starters.

I agree. I enjoyed the Mission to the Unknown animation and thought it was very well done.

I noticed that they list a 1953 episode of Robin Hood starring Patrick Troughton as Robin. That’s exciting, but I thought those episodes were lost. According to Wikipedia, all that exists is a 16 minute clip of one episode, but the list of DVD extras says episode, not excerpts from an episode. Has a whole episode recently been found?
