Here is an update from the BBC on the Mike smith fronted episodes : Thanks for getting in touch about Top of the Pops.
While he was alive, Mike Smith decided not to sign the licence extension that would allow the BBC to repeat the Top of the Pops episodes that he presented. Since his passing, the BBC is continuing to respect his wishes.
I hope this clarifies the situation for you.
Best wishes,
Richard Carey

OK so that solves that little mystery, it's a shame we are going miss a lot more TOTP repeats because of this.
IIRC the Noel Edmonds presented editions weren't shown on UK Gold in the 1990s due to a similar issue.

Nice to know that Mike Smith was and remains more important than the pop culture he was simply there to announce. I remember when he set himself up as arbitrator of pop when he took it upon himself to save us from the pernicious influence of the Jesus And Mary Chain. Great to see that he was shrewd enough to ensure that his legacy lived on in the small print. Christ the ego of these people.

Oh, and another thing, that reply from the BBC is craven nonsense. All you have to do is have a word with the estate - otherwise nothing with dead people in it would ever get shown on TV. "Respect his wishes". Royalty was he?

So are you going to send a strongly worded letter to Sarah Greene then?

No Richard, I'm a licence fee paying member of the viewing public, expressing an opinion on an internet forum. Programme Acquisitions do that. That's how TV works.

"Respect his wishes". Royalty was he? Actually, Rob, you don't know that they haven't already done so. Sarah Greene was almost certainly aware that Mike Smith had declined to sign the release forms in the past, so it's quite likely that she would decide to do the same and "respect his wishes". A shame, but there you go.

Just the standard issue TOTP presenter's ego, I'd have said. And there were worse ways it could have manifested itself. Anyway, he's dead now. And since he's not here to defend himself, a good few of you are bound by your own previous arguments to forget any bad things he might have done. I mean it wouldn't do to be whiny victims.

I have suspected that the BBC are hurrying through the early 80s editions, to get certain presenters out of the way quickly. Said presenters will depart during 1984.
Also because of an (over-generalised) BBC opinion that 70s-early 80s UK were bad old days that they don't want to dwell upon. Blighted totally by poverty, racism, unrest, discrimination etc, etc. This often comes through on BBC4 documentaries, e.g. most recently on the Boy George one.
With this in mind, Mike Smith was surely one of the presenters that represented a country 're-invigorated' under Mrs. Thatcher. However, his appearances are now to be omitted, and we will continue to get an abridged re-run of TOTP until 1988.

I find this very strange since the majority of TOTP presenters of this era ,including Mr Smith, oozed a deep and enduring love for themselves when on-screen.Back in the day I can imagine DLT banging on the DG's door demanding to sign the licence extension for a minimum of 1,000 years!

Ah yes, Radio One, the completely up itself years. Brings it all back doesn't it? The days when you could tune into Mike Read on the breakfast show and hear him singing along to the records, occasionally strumming along too. Gervais the hilarious homo. An embarrassment of riches. quack quack oops.

Totally agree Rob. Mind you although I am well past Radio 1 listening age I was having my hair cut a few years ago and the shop had R1 playing in the background and a certain Chris Moyles was on. I was sat in the chair for 20-25 minutes and during that time I counted just two records being played with the rest of the "entertainment" taken up with Mr Moyles' sycophantic crew laughing uncontrollably at everything that came out of his mouth. Progress.....??

As many as two? That's positively a megamix by Moyles standards isn't it? DLT watchers will be able to clarify this one, but wasn't there an occasion where the Hairy All-Bran spoke for 40 minutes on the breakfast show without playing a record?

Well as this appears to have descended into a free-for-all attack on TOTP presenters, let's turn it off for a bit.
