Yes a standard NAB hub 10.5 inch reel used professionally in the audio world. That would tie in with the slide projector control tape idea as I would expect there would have been another reel with the accompanying audio for the slide show if that's what it is. Not sure how they would have been synced up though.

Yes thinking now if it was a slide show tape it would have 4 tracks .... 2 stereo for the music track. 1 for the dialogue and 1 for the projector interfaces control track which had been programmed/recorded from an Amstrad computer (I wonder what happened to them LOL) I suppose it would depend if the show needed music/dialogue or not if the tape is otherwise mute?

I've uploaded a short sample (16secs) of the contents of the tape.
I recorded 20 mins worth and was of similar data noise.

Yes it sounds like 'Positrack' a 1970s/80s computer language for controlling very fast switches, dissolves, animations etc on carousel slide projectors ......amongst other things.

I know you now have the answer, but just out of passing interest it sounds just like the data transmissions that used to (and probably still) litter the Short Wave radio bands.

Yes I thought that.
I'd certainly like to get the whole tape over to my laptop, maybe there's hidden gold further on, but for now it'll have to wait.

Only just seen this for some reason - that's a reel of audio tape for larger machines that generally play at higher speeds of 7.5 or 15 inches per second. It needs a 'NAB' adaptor to fit onto the spool completely and the intriguing thing is that many professional recordings have a tone signal at the beginning of up to 30 seconds to allow the engineers to check everything's calibrated, so you may have a radio programme. Cheers, Stuart

I have managed to find someone who will be able to record whatever is on it for me, so once I get myself into gear I will let you know the findings
