I've located on YouTube the existing fragment from the episode featuring Trapeze (TX: 5/7/69) when they performed at Club Lafayette, Wolverhampton. It was shot on 16mm Film as opposed to VT, so it quite odd how only this clip managed to surface and not the complete episode, even-though this episode was entirely done on Film (due to the technical limitations of OB equipment at the time), it's chances of survival would have increased. The Trapeze episode used to be believed to exist in full, but latterly it's thought that it's probably just this film insert that exists at the BBC. However what wasn't commonly known until recently is that Trapeze shared their edition with the group Samson (I only recently updated the wiki with this info): www.discogs.com/artist/2547399-Samson-16My current thinking (and I could be wrong, but I think it's a strong possibility) is that Samson did the studio portion of the show, and Trapeze the filmed live bit. Or maybe Samson were also filmed live and their section hasn't survived. Either way, I think it's very likely that the extant film of Trapeze from this show is all there ever was of that group, hence it could be said that Trapeze's performance on Colour Me Pop exists in full: just it wasn't the full show.

Last Saturday I saw a recently recovered edition of Colour Me Pop at the Kaleidoscope event in Birmingham. It was an edition featuring The Hollies from (TX:7/9/68) and the episode survives as a B&W telerecording (taken from the studio tape) which was presumably found in Steve Turner's collection. A few years back a collection of film clips from Colour Me Pop were discovered in his collection, one of the prints was a allegedly a film print of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band edition (TX: 21/12/68). I remember at the time their was a lot of attention on this recovery, however all leads suddenly went cold following the crowd funding campaign to restore the prints. Were we duped at the time, it seems at the time all that was recovered was the colour 16mm film inserts featuring the band members from that episode and nothing more. I would like some clarification on this, is the complete version of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band edition still missing from the archives?

Another edition featuring The Nice (TX:16/11/68) seems to survive as a B&W telerecording; interestingly this edition was shot during their concert at Fairfield Halls, Croydon; and was filmed by an OB unit as opposed to 16mm film which was more commonly used on the show. Currently a VHS copy of the film print is treding the boards on the Youtube, it would be interesting to see whether the film print of the telerecording is still out there.
I've included a link to a click, starting at 8:17, which features the shot of an OB camera; providing concrete proof that it was shot on tape.

I would like some clarification on this, is the complete version of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band edition still missing from the archives? Hi Mike, I think I was sat beside you for the first part of Saturdays event! Wish I’d said hello now at the time to try to clear this up! Anyway, to explain from the start I visited Steve in 2015 and he showed me what material he had kept. This included the 16mm film insert material from the Bonzo Dog edition AND a b/w telerecording of the full show. However the telerecording was in bad shape; the film spool as it lay in the can was dislodged from its holder and bent into an almost ‘L’ shape. Anyway not being a technical expert (as you can probably tell from that description!) I alerted Kaleidoscope and Chris Perry to this potential discovery and they’ve been taking stock of Steve’s collection ever since, cataloguing restoring and screening it. In addition to the finds that resulted from this announced at the top of this thread, also found were the b/w Hollies show (not announced at the time due to a request by the Hollies rights holders, I believe) and the silent Orange Bicycle film insert (not catalogued as being from a seperate show till 2017). Anyway, to get back to the Bonzo stuff, it was soon discovered by Kal that while the 16mm colour film insert was in comparitively decent condition, the b/w telerecording of the full show was unplayable and would need a lot of work to restore, £1000 worth of work. To this end, in 2016 Bonzos fan Vince Nzo set up a Kickstarter to fund the restoration which was fulfilled and the money donated to Kal to commence. At the Nov 2016 Kal (and at an early 2017 comedy event, sorry can’t recall it’s name right now) the ‘complete’ Bonzo Dog edition was billed to be shown in anticipation that the restoration would be complete by then but in both cases this proved to be over optimistic. What ended up being shown at the 2016 Kal event was what they call Version 1 of the restoration (the restored film insert combined with the 3 known songs from the show to make a 20 minute version) while the comedy event screened the film insert and various Bonzo clips from other shows instead. Long story short since then is that the telerecording is a lot more damaged than Kal initially thought and restoration is having to be undertaken on a painstaking frame by frame basis and thus is still ongoing 3 years on. I don’t know anything further than that at the moment but a lot of people have everything crossed that they manage to restore it. Hope this explains the situation. EDIT: I see Chris Perry already answered this on fb. Good to have it reconfirmed that restoration is still ongoing and that although it’s not there yet that Bonzos fans will be ‘happy one day’ . We can only continue to wait for now..

Kaleidoscope have posted the Colour Me Pop footage of Salena Jones from 1968 that was shown at the Missing Believed Wiped virtual event last weekend. Good picture quality although the sound could do with some work. It seems a slightly strange choice to have had a jazz singer on a pop/rock show.

Good picture quality although the sound could do with some work. It seems a slightly strange choice to have had a jazz singer on a pop/rock show. Apparently there were originally envisionaged to be two strands to the Colour Me.. concept, 'Colour Me Pop' and 'Colour Me Jazz' but they ended up going out under one banner. The Peddlers, another jazz act were on another early edition of CMP too. Steve Turner who selected all the performers on the show was by his own admission totally new to the world of pop/rock music in 1968 but had experience directing jazz acts on the earlier BBC2 show 'Cool Of The Evening' (https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/676b0cc2e8d94e3fa04eef620a338d72) . Salena Jones came to CMP on the recommendation of Jim Smith, who was a LNLU journalist and jazz enthusiast and had also produced 'Cool Of The Evening'.

Thanks for the info AJ, very interesting about how Colour Me Pop started and the idea for a separate jazz show. The Peddlers made sense to be on CMP as they had more of a pop/rock aspect to their sound whereas the Salena Jones clip indicates she was a straight jazz singer and more suited to Colour Me Jazz.

...the Salena Jones clip indicates she was a straight jazz singer and more suited to Colour Me Jazz. Not entirely true! Like The Peddlers, Salena Jones' career also embraced pop, with her first couple of LPs (1970/71) including covers of songs like 'Spinning Wheel', 'Am I The Same Girl', 'Morning Dew' and 'Stoney End' often with great arrangements by Keith Mansfield. The LP 'Platinum' has sleeve notes by Radio 1 DJ Dave Cash which memorably start 'Dear Salena, what a gas album!'
Oh and if you've never heard her fab version of 'Right Now' with the Keith Mansfield Orchestra, well...

Whatever became of this haul? I've heard nothing since this time. I'll try to answer your question by returning to the original post and giving an update on the material listed. All is still held by Kaleidoscope AFAIK although since the listing in 2016 some material has been found to have existed elsewhere already and other additional material from the haul not known in 2016 has been uncovered. Colour Me Pop - six cans of Bonzo Dog Doo Dah material, most still to be transferred. So far the single can examined contains the colour film inserts of wacky poems and comedy moments. - all restored, the main film insert was shown at a Kal event in 2016. AFAIK some if not all of this material is due to be included on the upcoming Bonzos mega box. Take One Plus One - untransmitted 1971 music pilot featuring Yes and Stephen Stills. Ex 2" - no update Strawbs - early pop promos circa 1971. Ex 2" - this is the Grave New World film was already exists elsewhere and is available on commercial DVD. Beach Boys - Australian concert, not UK made. Colour film. I have been told by Australian collectors that this is a missing Beach Boys concert circa 1969.-I was in touch with Alan Boyd and Mark Linett who do all the recent Beach Boys reissues regarding this and I think Kal were able to provide them with a watermarked reference copy so they know it exists and what it consists of, but AFAIK they haven't used it for anything yet. Top of the Pops pop promos for Marmalade (several songs), The Kinks, two for Marc Ellingham, Bee Gees (Lonely Days) and The Tremeloes (Me and My Life). Some of these were made but may not have been shown if the record didn't chart. The Kinks one requires extra work before it can be transferred.I think a lot of these already existed elsewhere. The Marmalade 'My Little One' clip is in true colour which wasn't available previously and has recently been uploaded by Junior Campbell to his official channel. Disco 2 - animations used as backdrops for dancers to dance in front of Led Zeppelin and and Interlude tracks. Not sure what Interlude was? Perhaps it was a musical interlude? - no update There are still more cans to catalogue and transfer, but that's a very good start. There is one small can marked The Hollies / Colour Me Pop, but it turns out that was the Bee Gees pop promo and not Hollies material after all.The Hollies Colour Me Pop was recovered from this haul after all in b/w, and was shown at Kal in 2019. Recently one dubbed clip turned up on 192TV and Youtube. There is also a can marked Bonzo Dog that claims to be a complete telerecording of Colour Me Pop but that requires specialist transfer because of the quality of the film. This has AFAIK remained unrecoverable so far.

Maybe Plastic Man which was filmed in advance but never shown due to the word bum in the lyrics? Or possibly Drivin' from the summer of 69? There's some lovely colour stills on the net. Ray looks cool in his T-shirt. Maybe Victoria, which had a totp appearance. It would be great if any of the Colour Me Pop appeared, or Shangri-La from the Peter Sarsedt show. Only trouble is will we ever see the material. It's been a while since the Days performance from Crackerjack was discovered. Still, we live in hope!
Urban myth about Plastic Man being banned by the BBC because of the word 'bum' and one partly by to suit his narrative. The Kinks had already performed Plastic Man on Dee Time a few days earlier and it had been played on Radio 1. Due to other commitments the Kinks recorded their PM performance in advance. Back then the single charts were announced on a Tuesday, TotPs was recorded on a Wednesday and broadcast on a Thursday. When the chart was revealed for that weeks show the song had fallen and it was BBC/TotPs policy only show rising singles so it was not aired.
Days if from the Basil Brush Show not Crackerjack. I have been down so many blind alleys with CMP and the Shangri-la performance on the PS show. Never say never, but as time passes it is infinitesimally small that those still exist.
