Having tracked down and gathered together Michael Mason's "The Long March of Everyman" from reel-reel / cassette recordings in Southern Ireland and Australia, a group are now searching for episodes of "The British Seafarer." Please PM us if you know of extant recordings. The Beeb doesn't have any eps. and neither does the BL.
The restoration will be offered to the Beeb and BL. However they both declined "Everyman."

We now have these episodes on CD (actually DVD ROM) - each file is 500MB in FLAC format. They have been digitised by an expert from reel-reel off-air recordings. They are just about broadcast quality. The search continues for the other episodes.

2 Canvas, Hemp and Wood (intro / outro missing) 3 The High Seas 4 The Merchants 5 Charts, Sea-Clocks and Stars 6 The Complete Seaman 7 Stresses, Strains and Storms 8 The Long Blockade 11 Missing, Lost and Saved 13 Fisherman 20 The Dreadnought Navy 23 Jutland 24 The Battle of the Atlantic, 1939-45 (first 45 min)
===
Now what to do with the recovered recordings is a moot point.

Our search is almost complete. We have every episode of the British Seafarer complete except for episode 24 'The Battle for the Atlantic.' This was 60 minutes long, all the other episodes were 43 mins. Every contact who has supplied these other episodes only has a truncated version of 24. If anyone here can advise how to obtain a full version please PM us. Meanwhile like the other Michael Mason classic "The Long March of Everyman" what do do with our discoveries is a moot point. The Beeb isn't interested but folks are asking for copies.
The saddest aspect of all of this research and collecting is that like Charles Chilton's musical docudramas, and Charles Parker's less well known Radio Ballads including the Birmingham Ballads, Michael Mason's work is also ignored. Mason produced "Plain Tales of the Raj" and a number of follow-ups, "Everyman" and "Seafarer" yet none are ever aired today - if the Beeb still has them.

Let’s hope that at some point a national video & audio archive of broadcast material is created & everything submitted is saved and made accessible, regardless of current taste, preference or sensibilities. Pie in the sky I know but wouldn’t it be nice?

I understand that the BBC have master-tapes of the whole series. Why - no-one can access them?

what do do with our discoveries is a moot point. archive.org ? Archive.org is being sued by at least 4 book publishing companies due to breaking copyright. And the Beeb issues take-down notices to Archive.org - when it discovers infringements. Like it does to YouTube. But when contacted the Beeb Archives haven't a clue about anything as classic as Michael Mason's work, or Charles Parker, or Charles Chilton. And as for folk or jazz or C&W - forget it. Here's a post from an ex-Beeb employee at Transcription Services ... Re: I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again "Having a clearout before a house move and these tapes, 'obtained' when I worked in the Tape Library at Ken.House, will be donated to Kaleidoscope for their safe keeping. They are the un-cut studio tapes for the complete 1973 series of 'I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again'. The BBC actually has digital copies of all of these (plus some more) which I gave them, via Keith W.... a few years ago. Oh, did I get even a 'thank you'? Nope. So, the tapes will go to Chris Perry's Kaleidoscope team as they'll probably keep them better than the Beeb will! Just noticed that there is a reel missing from the 11.11.73 recording, it's here somewhere! I still have to locate the some other stuff too, the loft beckons! Oh, in case you're wondering, I 'obtained' them when I was told to wipe them and re-use the tapes. I took them home instead."

And as for folk or jazz or C&W - forget it. At least they'd be there long enough for people to hear them! I couldn't give a monkeys about hearing them myself, but I realise that it would be frustrating for those that do want to hear them to know that they've been carefully collected, restored, and then thrown back into a black hole again! And the Beeb issues take-down notices ... - when it discovers infringements. Like it does to YouTube. Not always true. Often the BBC asserts its ownership but chooses to let the video stay, instead choosing to place ads with the video. When that happens it looks like it's an admission of "Ok, this is ours, but we don't mind it being there."
