Re 186 the European Cup semi-final Tottenham v Benfica this was the first football match I can ever remember watching on tv as 7 year old. They showed the 2nd half live and it was a thrilling watch as Spurs just failed to overturn a 1st leg defecit. Many years later in 2014 the teams met again in Europe on ITV and I was wondering if they would show any footage from the 1962 game. In the event they showed the Pathe newsreel coverage which leads me to suspect that once again any tv recording has long since disappeared, indeed as it was a live broadcast it may never have been recorded at all.

I was 6 when that game was played so I cannot remember if it was shown in Scotland? my dad was a football fan so if it was it would have probably been on in our house.
I can investigate at the library if you want?
My team Hibernian were the first British team to compete in a European campaign back in 1955 when we too reached the semi-final
against Stade Reims of France in April 1956.
Unfortunately we lost 3-0 on aggregate over 2 legs.
Stade Reims went on to lose the final to Real Madrid.

Re 186 Many of Spurs matches in this cup run exist as recorded highlights & can be easily found on you tube.Of course many such highlights have also long gone & I think that the retention rate for Spurs is due to the fact that ,with all due respect to Hibs, this was the first time that it looked like a British club could actually win the European Cup ...sorry William!!! Of course the honour of being the first British side to win the European Cup ultimately fell to Jock Stein's brilliant Celtic team, the Lisbon Lions.

Re 181 Dickie Henderson show.I always enjoyed this but even as a little boy I found his "mid Atlantic" accent irritating.I know he spent some of his childhood in the USA but this was just an affectation on his part at a time when all entertainers in his category mimicked the Rat Pack.

Of course the honour of being the first British side to win the European Cup ultimately fell to Jock Steins brilliant Celtic team, the Lisbon Lions. No offence taken. Actually Hibs were not the Scottish Champions in 1955 that honour belonged to Aberdeen; but Aberdeen did not want to compete in Europe! Hibs at the time had a tremendous reputation among European teams so we were invited to take part. I remember seeing an article in a book or a newspaper somewhere by one of the Hibs "Famous Five" stating that if the European Cup had been maybe 5 yrs earlier in 1950 then Hibs arguably could have won the cup! Spurs almost got to the final then but Benfica were some team back then. At least Spurs have won the Cup Winners Cup and the Europa League so well done.

According to my Dad the Home Nation's FA's were very much against clubs entering the European competitions at first, so a few clubs had to wangle things to compete.
Kent Walton had a mid Atlantic accent, which I read he picked up from Canadian servicemen while in the RAF.

Kent Walton had a mid Atlantic accent, which I read he picked up from Canadian servicemen while in the RAF. Lawrie Reilly a member of the Hibs team that entered the inaugural European Cup tournament in 1955 stated in his book "Last Minute Reilly" "The English FA banned English champions Chelsea from appearing in the inaugural European Cup as the powers that be down south thought that English clubs had nothing to learn from playing against foreign opposition"
