I don't know what others think, but I think this new idea of having someone log in or register before they can see the forum is a mistake.
I think it will put off casual viewers (or those who arrive here by chance) who like to just come and see what is going on and over time may then join up and contribute because they have become inspired by what they have read..

I agree.
This is the only Proboards forum I'm a member of. Does this new Log In system apply to all Proboards forums or just certain ones?, and why has this been enforced?
It's been changed sometime during the day, as I checked this morning and the standard "open" forum for members and outsiders was still in operation.

I've got a dread of reading my email-that doesn't include PMs-so it would certainly have put me off.(Cries of "Hurrah!").As it was,I suppose I'd visited the site intermittently for six months or a year before I registered.Used to visit Wipednews, too, when it was being regularly updated.

perhaps they are worried isis has infiltrated the group......or they just want to always see who looks. there are other forums, so time will tell...... I've since found out from Proboards that the reason for this unexpected decision can only be obtained from the forum's own moderators, as Proboards don't have any control over individual forums' decisions of this nature. Your theories sound very logical. At least one Proboards forum is still open to the public to view, but from your comments, it sounds like Missing Episodes is not the only one with a new closed from the public forum rule. Hopefully one of the moderators will put us in the picture asap.

Unless it was an emergency decision and activated in haste, it might have been polite for the members to have been informed of this happening, prior to it's activation. ....holding breath for excuses...lol.

I don't see any harm with casual viewers, let them surf the forum, BUT they would have to register before they can post. Then they would have to abide by the rules. We constantly need new blood for the forum to survive.

if we all have to log in now, should the users thing on the main page, still have a guest bit? ....still holding breath......

I wonder if the same applies to The Security Kitchen? I suspect that quite a few people would like to be a fly on that wall!

I am on other Proboards forums where the log-in only rule applies.
In the case of at least one of those boards, it was because a previous forum ended acrimoniously. They only wanted vetted members joining the new one.
Unfortunately, this means that casual readers cannot browse. This is a shame, because I browsed missing-episodes.com for some time before I applied for membership.

It's a shame that casual readers cannot browse.. personally, if it had been that way when I first 'found' the forum, I'm not sure that I would have signed up before seeing what it was all about. Would anyone, I wonder?
Moderators.. any comments?

This is being discussed at the moment. Personally, my feeling is that it should remain read-only to non-members. For precisely the reasons you state, Kev.
