Hi all,
I am wondering what the current situation is in regard of Steptoe and Son archive. I understand that all but one of the episodes from Series 1 to 4 survive as 16 mm telerecordings. The only episode that does not is 'My Old Man's a Tory' which survives as a poor optical recording.
From Series 5 to 8, the whole of Series 7 and 8 survive as original master, colour recordings, along with two episodes of Series 6. The rest of the colour episodes only survive as low quality 405-line recordings except for 'A Winter's Tale' which was recovered in 2008 as a b/w telerecording.
I am wondering if, like the Dad's Army episode, Room At The Bottom, could A Winter's Tale be restored into colour using the chroma dots. If so, why has this not been done already?
Also, apart from this, do none of the colour episodes missing survive in any other form than the 405-line VT recordings? Could these not be restored in some way (audio restoration, picture improvements, etc.) to make them more watchable?
Many thanks

You can search for information about the archive status of many shows at Lostshows.com Here's the info for Steptoe & son. It may be a little out of date. www.lostshows.com/default.aspx?programme=9f519a97-670f-4d7a-b0ed-69ede0da8e0dThere are no missing episodes from the series itself. There was a short sketch for Christmas, only a few minutes long, that is missing, and another that partly survives.

Many thanks only the first half of the episode was recovered on film , and colour recovery has been done on it - it looks very good, IIRC I saw it at the Raiders event at BAFTA. If the whole episode had been found on film I'm sure the BBC would have found a slot for it on BBC2

The restoration of the 'Oh,What A Beautiful Mourning' episode on YouTube was done by my good friend Appzzzman. He also worked tirelessly restoring many of the grainy poorer quality b/w episodes with some superb results, albeit sourced from DVDs and not the original film elements of course. Within days of uploading these they were all too-quickly banished by YouTube citing the usual copyright infringement I'm afraid.

Contact Keith Wickham - he's on the BBC Transcription Services group on Facebook. And he has his own page. He restores off-air recordings from the public for re-airing on Radio 4 Extra et al. He could advise on the situation. Meanwhile I hear that many restorers upload to ulozto.net/====

I might be wrong, but were a better set of prints recovered from somewhere maybe last year or the year before

I might be wrong, but were a better set of prints recovered from somewhere maybe last year or the year before I believe Phil Morris found an episode of Steptoe called My Old Man's a Tory which was a better quality version to the one that we had originally.
