I recently went through some old diary notes circa 1979. Amazed to find I'd made some notes on old ITV adverts from the early 70s I'd since forgotten!
Notes from 1979 read: Tony Hancock "Awdyer like yer eggs - fried or boiled?" "Omlette de Ouvre, Mrs.." "is that FRIED or BOILED".
The posh dish described wasn't exactly that, but I recognise this as the 1965 - 66 Patricia Hayes 'go to work on an egg' series, which still ran around 1974 - 76, and exists.
The second entry describes a pensioner saying "Oh!, I haven't tasted eggs as good as this since...." lost in thought at a long forgotten date.
Entry says '1974' but I don't think I've seen this one in recent years.
Next - set at a dinner table, man to his wife 'Ere, le's 'ave some more.. what was it called?" (wife): "quiche lorraine.."
"Oh! posh eh? At the end of the advert the man pulls his wife towards him and says "alright, give us a QUICHE, Lorraine - ahaha.."
Think this one's lost.
Next - Arthur Mullard as a barman. A 'posh' customer enters the pub. Notes say played by Ian Ogilvy - ? "Coffe please" (customer). Mullard brings it. Tasting it, the customer pulls a face. "Oh! - it's bitter". Mullard: "shall I bung it under the tap?". Customer "No! - I think coffee should be MILD, but WITH FLAVOUR, not too strong, but not too weak". Mullard "sounds like Gold blend" (or was it new mellow Birds?) Customer "Oh! have you got some then?" Mullard "NO! now shall I bung it under the tap?
Date 1974 (alleged).
Next - For Maxwell house. Set in Jamaica. Jamaican or African man shakes the jar in time to music. At advert end he turns to the camera and insists "Ah knows it - Ah GROWS it!"
In the wake of this I revived some other forgotten advert memories -
Around 1973 - 74, adverts for lock together G plan kitchen models 'HYGENA Q - A'. It was like the Dulux advert, all white background furniture and rooms. The product seemed continually advertised.
Circa 1970, 'Watneys red barrell' adopted a red square logo which used to be on top of the handles of the pubs that served it, or above the outside door. To promote this, I recall a couple of men running into the middle of a field in nowhere and seeing a giant red watneys square, with a tiny square door in the side. It seemed outsized. like a pyramid, probably acheived by optical double printing the film. Not sure if this was the one that started "where do we go from here" (when lost). Reply "how about the most welcoming pub in the world?" (i.e. Watneys).
Couple more - A ROLO advert which had a catchy theme played con an ensemble of kazoos. The record was released on Columbia as 'Sir Henry and his Butlers' 1967. I recall a girl running to meet her boyfriend from behind a fire escape? This was followed by a description of Rolo sweets. As the voice over played; a photo animation of the base of a chocolate forming from a poured stream, the toffee centre building up inside, and the external chocolate walls climbing up to the top was shown. It was on a white background.
There was also and advert for Cadburys drinking chocolate very similar to the 'wear something white at night' campaign (1964 - 65). In this a woman in a white sowester, plastic mac and wellies walked down a wet street at night with her boy. As the footsteps squelched voices imagined whispering "hot choc - late, drin - king choc - late" appeared over and over in rhtyhm to it. When they arrived in the warm, they all had a cup of chocolate.
More - a P.S. There was a similar scenario to a 'lost' / forgotten advert shown in 1971. A man in mac stood before a suburban house at night, dressed in a coat or mac, shivering. A male voice over suddenly announced "poor, cold, Fred... He hasn't heard of central heating". I recalled the advert when seeing a picture in an old readers digest magazine. We used to send up the dialogue while I walked home with friends from school.
Be pleased to hear any other memories or clues as to what happened to some of these items.
P.P.S. Does anyone recall that ESSO ran I think all the Esso blue adverts they'd made to date from the 50s onward in a celebration compilation advert, around Xmas 1970?
