IMHO the BBC have certainly got their act together in afternoon telly,Father Brown/Dr Blake are excellent bits of fluff (I say fluff as apparently a lot of people are complaining on the IMDB about historical inaccuracies) but who cares as long as they entertain and have strong characters (which they do)? I caught The Indian Doctor a while back with time off in my working days and also thought it was quite brilliant and considering the restraints of an afternoon budget, these shows are often very involved prop wise and you wonder how they achieve what they do. It would be a shame I reckon if these shows were to cross over to say the vacuous and crap filled Saturday night schedule, where they would have more money thrown at them so they would become bloated and too pleased with themselves. When you mean 'the Indian Doctor',are you talking about Dr Ranj, the children's doctor that appears on CBBC in the afternoons? He's excellent - my 6 year old daughter loves him!

The best time for cult television in my opinion was the mid 90s when the superb cable channel BRAVO was broadcasting all the ITC on a daily basis. They showed complete runs of Space 1999,Danger Man,The Prisoner,Joe 90,Protectors etc together with especially made documentaries on some of the shows and some cult movies as well.I would come home from work and all this great retro TV would be on.The channel would start transmitting in the afternoon and then repeat the shows again in the evening. It also scheduled a limited and selected run of Thriller episodes on a Saturday afternoon which was just wonderful-I fell in love with that serial.Bravo then changed it's programming to American imports and was never the same.It folded soon after but in terms of programming and scheduling,it was unforgettable.

Bravo was actually a great channel back in the day. I taped a few great kung fu films off of there and indeed, they did show some great cult television! If there were more channels like that about, I might be tempted to actually own a TV again!

The terrestrial channels were also showing good retro TV in the mid 90s IIRC. E.g. The Persuaders, The Avengers, U.F.O. could be found on BBC2 or Channel 4.

ITV4 still show great retro TV on weekday mornings such as The Saint and Man in a Suitcase. The Saint with Roger Moore was such a wonderful series-preposterous but wonderful!

This country - huh - I'm off to New Zealand for good next year. If the pollution doesn't kill me here the NHS surely will. As my aged aunt of 98 has opined more than once "this country isn't the one she fought for in the [second world] war.
