In 1974 Alastair Scott Johnston, the Radio 2 producer, created his first stereo show 'Ricochet'. True, he had broadcast many programmes using a stereo feed previously but 'Ricochet' was a deliberate attempt to maximise what this new sound field could give the listener. The programme starred the Australian character actor Ray Barrett best known to viewers as a no nonsense straight talking personality. The listener was engaged as soon as the theme music began with a gun shot and a wide screen orchestration written by Gerhard Narholz and performed by the very popular Norrie Paramor And The Midland Radio Orchestra.( it should be noted that Gerhard wrote a second piece which he also named Ricochet but is completely different to the radio serial composition. However, this second recording (no gunshots) was possibly used by Pete Murray as his theme tune daily - also on Radio 2) Fleet Street investigative journalist Rick O' Shea turned crime fighter was 1970's make-over of Dick Barton with the show going out at lunch time ( a repeat of the previous evenings broadcast) and again in the late evening Bob Holness' show (22.45hrs). To accompany the radio programmes Radio Times commissioned a graphic artist to produce a storyline which was included inside the magazine. Sadly, there is a gap in the archiving of this show and I would love to acquire scans of Radio Times artwork and any recordings that exist. It was Alastairs daughter who started me on this quest 6 years ago and at present I have the BBC 45 and a Norrie Paramour LP. All help gratefully received!

Here's an episode from Dec 1974. www.mediafire.com/?tl6iogoc4se57d6It must be from the same week as Dick Barton appeared on the show because although he's not in it he gets a passing mention.

Hello Dan, Thank you for this link. This is a useful one to me and I will need to listen to the show I have to determine whether it is before or after the episode here. I am really chuffed to have this added to my tiny archive, and I am hugely grateful for your thoughtfulness and vigilance.
Amazing!

Still looking for more Ricochet Dan,apologies for the long wait but sadly the site still can not handle the file sizes I have, which is just over 5Mb per show. The three recordings available are: Pt 4 26 December 1974, Pt 5 27 December 1974, & Pt 6 30 December 1974. All with Dick Barton....

What site cannot host 5MB files???
We have Gigabytes of archived radio files freely hosted on Mega, PCloud, Mediafire, Archive.org, Seedbucket, and others.
We only ever had problems with PutLocker / FireDrive who scammed thousands by continuing to debit credit cards after their entire site was taken down without notice due to commercial film copyright takedowns. They were based in Singapore - enough said. Then we lost our entire archives of thousands of radio programmes - luckily duplicated elsewhere.
For other Ricochet Dan files have you tried ORCA? Or even ORCAT? Maybe Keith Wickham knows of some episodes in the BBC Archives?
Re: your existing files why not put them up onto Archive.org ?

"I would love to acquire scans of Radio Times artwork and any recordings that exist." - try eBay they often sell old RTs. Recently I got a mint one from 1969 containing many articles about the inimitable Charles Chilton.

My mistake Stephen, regarding sound files.
I tried to upload the Ricochet picture files here. Despite my best attempts I am advised the forum has used its quota of space despite the images being under 1Mb.
I rarely go to other boards I neither have the health or time to look at a screen for too long. Earlier post trying to send direct has been deleted. I'll try again next month.

I used to listen to and enjoy 'Ricochet' back in its day. Didn't they roll out the old stock bullet ricochet sound effect as part of the opening intro?
Although I think I followed the show for some time, I'm ashamed to admit that my most vivid memory is of a scene where a character moans about the effect on his backside from sitting down on a cold stone churchyard wall! Why the hell this snippet of dialogue should stick in my head after all these years, God knows! Is there anyone out there that has a recording of the episode in question and can confirm I've remembered the dialogue correctly?

Apologies for quality but I have had to compress the files to creep the pictures into the site. If you click twice on the image it gets super-sized, and is easily readable
