does anyone really know why VHS tapes suddenly develop tracking probles (fluffing at the bottom of screen)
and in some cases flickering bleeding colour in the middle of the screen
and lastly green streaks sitting on the top only
is this all due to room temperature at the moment of play ?? as sometimes that the "tracking probs" dont appear on a certain "same" section of tape, and at later times get worse...
sometimes "Ghostly sparklies" do appear which i believe are mobile phones and suchlike....
I must add some early stuff was re-archived in 1992 from LP to LP, this could be one cause, but as some play perfect, it puzzles me

Before copying from any video tape, make sure you fast forward it to the end of the tape, and back again! This will re-pack the tape on to the spools - nice, tight and even... Also do this, with any brand new blank VHS tapes you may buy and use... as recording on to a loosely packed tape, can cause problems... Whist the above is not likely to cure the problems you have, it’s just something to remember - for those that don't already do it... Soon, there'll be no need, as we'll all have DVD recorders - but in the meantime, as many of us are still in the process of transferring tapes to DVD, it’s worth a note...

thats what I used to do, i always wound (air) them FF to end and back before rec/play
sometimes this helps to forget that it's "Tripping"
i have found that leaving them in the VCR (overnight) has also helped as the only purpose is for mastering to DVDR
and in some cases they have improved and held a good picture

Soon, there'll be no need, as we'll all have DVD recorders and lots of discs that in five years down the line possibly won't play properly.
