Guys, we were having a prune of the DW section, mostly to see if anyone noticed the loss of the polls. It seems people did, so reinstated. Any problems PM me direct.

It seems to have been deleted along with my sixties poll as well. Such a pity. And quite a lot of other threads which seemed to be doing no harm to anyone. Baffling. Yep, like that one on the 51st anniversary - which was only a few days ago! And the Capaldi thread, which I seem to recall has had about 5,000 more reads in the last few weeks. But shucks, I guess if there's a need for us to have a spruce then anything and anyone is up for the memory chute. Even the current Doctor! Why bother to write and chat with chums here if we can't look back and learn from it? Why bother to put finger to keyboard at all, in an atmosphere I thought was genial and open? Maybe it'd save time all round if less of us started writing here, period!

Hi Paul,
We're planning a few changes which I think everyone will appreciate.
Moved threads reinstated here now, but in future off topic threads will have their own section.
Any problems with any threads you think should still be here but aren't, PM me direct.
Cheers,
Paul

I hope you're right Mr V, and I'll keep an eagle eye on the boards and the currently suddenly absent threads people here have made, in a spirit of shared enthusiasm and good humour, as much a credit to ourselves and love of the show as the mods who've supported and encouraged us to play nice and be our best. I'd hate to think that the genial tone which drew me here, that I thought was a distinctive differentiation we had compared to some other places I shan't mention, isn't a mirage. For mine, I wanted to reply to a few folks in them - and now I can't, because I can't get at their posts. In kickstarting the Capaldi thread, it was never my intent to make anyone cross with it. We like what we like, and we don't have to like all Who equally well - be it New or Classic. A few members thought it was off-topic, but I was impressed that at least one of my betters in the Modsphere didn’t agree. I thought that was a gentlemanly and mature gesture, to allow a unified thread for those of us who want to kick around thoughts on the current show, which has been referencing visual cues and tropes from the old stuff all year. It’s gotten a crazy amount of traffic in recent weeks, and that truly staggered me, to be honest. (It ain’t me refreshing, I promise!) Now, if that’s no longer permitted, I think a lot of people will be disappointed, even if they didn’t like watching it. For all I know, that may even include the Beeb, the maker of all this stuff we like. One less polite, thoughtful place to talk about the show is a loss to us all. I really hope this isn't the choice taken, to welcome the newest and perhaps the most exciting new lead and era of Doctor Who that we've seen some time - by silencing those of us who want to talk about it.

I think we have to find a balance between stifling conversation and turning this place into another Gallifrey Base. Setting up an O/T section will allow people somewhere to talk about more general stuff as well as leaving the strictly Missing Episodes-related threads as (quite rightly) the main focus of the forum.
Whilst we don't want this to turn into another general Dr Who forum, at the same time, we also want people to stay here!
Hopefully the changes we have in mind will work for most people.

I really hope so too, Rob! Many of us New Series likers are just as mad keen on the B&W and missing eps, as you know! Even if we've less to say about them. More than a few of us wore out our mice buttons trying to get iTunes to download Enemy and Web faster! (Of course, not everyone was as barking as me as to buy an Apple TV on day of release so I could watch it as it should be, on the couch!) And we'll surely all be thrilled if there's ever any more for us found and returned for us to see, whether it's "again" like the veterans here or like me, for the first time. As you note, that's a very large part of why we're here! Even if we aren't hunting for or restoring them ourselves, like some of the good folk here who do! But in the meantime, I think Capaldi and Moffat are doing us proud and the show currently being made is offering up a lot to like, especially for those with an eye to the past and a love of the heritage of the series. And it's great to chat about it, to get different points of view just as we do with the older eps most have seen many times already, as that can be used as a springboard for discussion. So if that aspect of our little gathering here can be kept alive, I think that's a very positive sign for the health and fun of the board and its members! Now, about that missing 51st Anniversary thread...

Passion is a strong thing with this programme. Capaldi is great, but the rest of it is letting him down. 1 opinion in a large sea is all it is As far as Mod's are concerned-As long as it never ends up like G/B then we have nothing to fear ! Never would we want if you don't agree with me your out attitude

I think that the new off topic section might help me as I was planning to do further polls of favourite Doctor Who serials. I was quite reluctant to do a "Favourite Seventies Serials" poll due to the Tom Baker stories being intact. Instead I narrowed it down to a "Favourie Pertwee serials" (which I would highly recomend checking out if you haven't done so already ) They were purely for research purposes only. I must say that my "favouite sixties serials" poll was quite a sucsess. It is rather interesting to see quite a few serials that are missing leading the way. That and with the recovery of Enemy and Web last year they did quite well also. So there seems to be some very promising signs.

OK.
I'm pretty sure everything is now back, but please note that things will be moving around again fairly soon.
If we can keep track I'll post a note abou where everything has gone. It should only take a few days to bed down.

I think an off topic section is a good idea. Sometimes threads do spill into areas which are frankly completely unrelated to the purpose of the forum, but sometimes they make for very interesting reading all the same. Good call chaps

Dear Mods,
Thanks very much for the explanations and for understanding that our enthusiasm sometimes takes us off into not-quite-missing-episode territory. As Rob said, the main purpose of this site is missing episodes and should remain so. I think we can all agree that this is a matter that is near and dear to all of our hearts, and that the discussions posted here are civil, informative and entertaining. The idea of an o/t section is a brilliant compromise that, hopefully, will permit the main focus to remain on missing episodes, while allowing our occasional, good-natured interest in wider matters related to the show to continue.
Again, thanks for making this site a welcoming and enjoyable place. For people like me, who really don't have anyone at hand with whom to share my love for this show, the opportunity to participate in meaningful discussions (and not fanboy crap) is much appreciated.

I think the important thing is to remember that this is primarily a Missing Episodes forum, so we'd ask that you remember that when deciding where to start your post. Also, don't get offended if your thread is moved into an Off-topic section..!
Anyway, this is a little way down the line, I suspect, so bear with us.

I think the idea of an 'on-topic' section is marvelous!

Going back to the title of this thread the idea of an off-topic section is most certainly not rubbish at all.
