Wouldn't be suprised to find it was Nitrate Film. That stuff has caused a hell of a lot of archive fires over the years. It's very flammable, and almost impossible to extinguish (even if you put the whole reel underwater). There is also a hell of a lot of nonsense spouted about nitrate film as well!. Considering that projectionists used it with a high temperature naked arc lamp for 50 years, from what has been said about it, every cinema in the worldy should have burnt down and every film should have been lost by now.. Nitrate film is like anything else it needs fresh air and TLC, if its left sealed up in a can for many years, then this is when it is at its most fiery . I once set fire to a load that was in good condition, the fire and what I had been told to expect was very disappointing. Also TV tended to use 16mm which I dont think was ever available in nitrate? but I maybe wrong?

"Nothing remains of popular 60s programmes such as 'Francie & Josie' (two Glaswegian Teddy Boys). Some good news is that at least one enthusiast taped these on reel to reel. All of these recordings are in private hands" What ! u mean someone out there has copies of " the adventures of francie and josie " , i read in the recent script book that Stv for some reason wiped them all which was strange because it got more viewers than coronation street ! If someone does have them does anyone know if they are prepared to give them up to Stv ? I realise that this is a very old post but I would love to find an audio recording of Francie and Josie. If anyone has any clues re how to locate them please PM me. Many thanks.

Yes Kodak introduced 16mm on safety stock entirely (then) for amateur us to prevent people going for 17.5mm and splitting 35mm nitrate for it. I think the French Pathe Rural was a 17.5mm system for local small cinemas that spread to home use. Keeping nitrate, especially badly, in homes is not a good idea.

I remember reading some years ago that one of the ITV companies had their archive stored in one of the London underground stations, possibly Tottenham Court Road or thereabouts. Was that LWT or Thames ? Think it was an archive of 2inch Quad tapes. Probably all copied to Digi-Beta now.

I've heard some unused bits to the Northern line were used as air raid shelters, then for archiving when the tube didn't need them.
