I'm not sure if this has been raised before, but as a youngster in the early 70s I remember seeing a TV appearance by a new pop singer called Alvin Stardust. My memories are vague (I was about 7 at the time), but I seem to remember Alvin as having some sort of clown make-up, or at least something in the glitter fashion. I was puzzled then when a while later Alvin re-appeared as someone else in his familiar leather gear.
Years later I discovered that the original Alvin was Peter Shelley who had written the first song and appeared under the name but didn't want to continue performing as Alvin, which at least reassured me that my memory wasn't faulty.
The only TV appearance I can find mentioned for the first Alvin was on Lift Off. I have no idea which programme it was that I saw, but wondered if anyone knew any more about the first Alvin and whether any TV recordings still survive.

This extract is taken from this website.... www.alvinstardust.co.uk/timelimeblankframe.html?ifrm_3=page208.html31 Oct 1973 Peter Shelly, under the name of Alvin Stardust makes 1st TV appearance on Lift Off With Ayshea programme. Made up in a white mask. Also on the program was Guy Lutman & the Feet, Jimmy Helms, Whistle, Lieutenant Pigeon. 15 Nov 1973 Top Of The Pops broadcast: My Coo Ca Choo Peter unwilling to take on the persona looks for a new person to take over the mantle, and after both Marty Wilde and Vince Eager turn done the chance it’s offerted to Shane. Seeing as his 60s image is considered too old fashioned a new look is sought and with a new hair style and change of colour, plus stick on side burns the Alvin Stardust image is formed. Making its first appearance on 1st appearance on Top of the Pops.

Not unlike the Phantom.Except no skull-ring. He re-invented himself by using,as it turns out,a persona devised by someone else.I think for a little while there one could do a "not many people know that" about his real (?) name, but I couldn't recall seeing Shane Fenton perform in the 60s. So...should 'Thank Your Lucky Stars' listings have him as thingy or whatsit?

There's a comment replying to this blogspot, from someone else who remembers the original Alvin: musicsoundsbetterwithtwo.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/the-stand-in-star-alvin-stardust-my-coo.htmlPurple afro wig and jump suit apparently My memories are much more vague - just remember the white face, possibly may have had a star painted over one eye, but can't be sure. What day was Lift Off shown, because my memory of seeing the performance was at my Grandparents in Birmingham, which would have made it Saturday teatime . It's quite possible there could have been several appearances around that time, of course, on different shows... edit - have seen a mention of Alvin Stardust appearing on Clunk Click (BBC TV show), but whether that was Peter or Bernard/Shane I have no idea. It was more likely to have been a BBC than ITV appearance that I saw, thinking about it.

The Wikipedia version of events is that Shane Fenton and the Fentones was a school band and the lad who was "Shane Fenton" died just before their big break, so our Mr Stardust took over the role. Is that true? Did he effectively do this same thing twice - assuming a persona already established by someone else?

11 minutes in for the story of the first 'Shane Fenton' www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUrN5UaKiY8 A very good,low-key interview.More like a monologue, but in the best way.The first 'Shane Fenton' didn't perform under that name.34 minutes in for 'Alvin Stardust'. I smiled when Alvin mentioned Stoke-on-Trent,given that Fenton is just up the road from here!

But... the demo tape sent to the BBC was credited to Shane Fenton and... whatever he called the group. And that name was thought up by the lad who died before he sent the tape off - so he had effectively performed under that name on the tape at least. So it is closer to the same situation than I'd thought it was.

You're right,Dave.I was hurrying a bit but should have said that the feller had sent off a demo tape to 'Saturday Club' as being from Shane Fenton.(And the Fentones?).
