I heard the telerecording equipment failed during the original performance, which was once of the reasons for the second performance, unless that's an urban myth.

Just watched the blu-ray and it is still disturbing. The part where Winston shuffles in front of the mirror during the torture scene is heartbreaking.
It does have the original film inserts which look fabulous. The notes say the BFI debated whether to tone down the inserts to match with the picture quality of the live parts, but they decided to go with the pristine print transfers.
Interesting to hear in one of the extras that a 20 minute telerecording may have been made of the first broadcast on the Sunday night. Nobody seems to be sure if it happened.
Does anybody know if Kneale's missing play "The Road" was sold abroad?

Very much a myth - you can see it billed in the Radio Times: genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/page/9569ae729931431f81df7281369ed78eIt's interesting on this new release to finally be able to see Michael Barry's introduction to the second performance, which I'd not seen before.

I thought it might be, along with the story of the Quatermass Experiment telerecordings being halted by a technician's strike.
