I found another instance of the 1978 BBC2 Xmas ident earlier this week on Umatic. Interestingly, it’s a much tighter shot than the one Kaleidoscope found on Betamax last year, that is to say, the camera is zoomed much further in to the buglers. The TV Museum will uploading it on Sunday which will be it’s 40th anniversary of TX. That's great to hear another recording of the 1978 BBC2 Christmas ident has been found. I wonder if other Christmas idents were recorded as part of live tx feeds from respective television stations; it would be interesting if any examples of Christmas presentation existed besides the one for the Kinks Christmas Concert. The BBC2 idents from 1977 & 1981 exist in broadcast quality for this reason. That’s all until 1987.

PS I gave a presentation of such idents at the BFI Missing Believed Wiped show, three years ago.

Just to say, extracts from the three Pan's People routines, plus various other TV Museum finds, will be shown in the first half of Missing Believed Wiped on Saturday.

Anyone know what exists of Swap Shop dated 9/1/1982 other than the Peter Davison Dr Who section? I've come across 20 minutes on Betamax of the Dame Edna section from the same show.

The TV Museum holds extracts from VHS of three missing episodes of Superstore: 5/2/83 (23 mins) 19/3/83 (28 mins - with sound!) 29/10/83 (20 mins)
Also 5/11/83 (13m) and 19/11/83 (1hr 4m) but I understand they both exist.

Just a quick one to say I went through a tape full of Pan's People performances from 1975/76. Tape played more or less ok with just the odd sync error for 40 mins, before problems were encountered which I'll try to solve at a later date. There were I think 3 missing PP performances including "Mr Postman" in the first 40 minutes of the tape.

In my experience that generally only applies to commercially released material, not master copies or "archives", we are also not talking about an individual here but an organisation that appears to be presenting as both non-profit and profit venture. The other question still remains, how would a non profit organisation have a model to buy and sell archive material, or afford to purchase "an archive" they can't do anything legally with. I'm just curious as to how that would be viable as once buying and selling comes into it, its no longer a non-profit venture and other legalities come into play. Just because money changes hands that doesn't mean it's a profit making exercise. So I work in TV, and also manage a small TV archive. I have a small-medium sized VT machine room, so if a TV company, or anyone else (other than a friend), contacts me and asks for copies of my material (which happens occasionally) they will get charged my professional rate for dubbing off footage. However, I spend many hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds a year on equipment, only a fraction of which is recouped in transfer fees. I also put in hundreds of unpaid hours. So I don't make a profit from my archive, I make a loss, at least directly. However, indirectly it could be argued that I have made money through my archive because I've earned producer commissions for several programmes which I would likely not have done, were it not for my archive activities. These things are rarely simple.

They're certainly separate physically. ITN have their stuff in a large vault at the basement in Gray's Inn Road.

hi
I've never really been a TOTP aficionado. Are there many missing 60s or 70s performances by key artists which are regarded as "holy grails" by their fans?

No I haven't found that yet, hope to at some point. I have 10 BBC continuities from the Xmas week but every single one of them is BBC1! The Xmas ident ran from Saturday 23rd (or possibly the evening of Friday 22nd) until Tuesday 26th. Your list looks broadly accurate to me. Other than the 60s snowflakes, The earliest Xmas idents I've found so far are, like everyone else, from 1974.

Quick update on missing stuff found since last discussed
VHS finds: Swap Shop 10/10/81 (it's missing half an hour from 90-120 mins in, but the BBC have all of reel 2 anyway so between us it's either complete, or very nearly complete) Saturday Superstore 5/2/83 (22 minute extract) Saturday Superstore 19/3/83 (28 minute extract) - according to lostshows, the picture for this edition already exists but there is no sound.
Betamax finds: Pebble Mill at One 16/3/82 (5 minute extract with Peter Davison)
Philips finds: 6/3/76 Saturday Scene (6 minute extract - Kaleidoscope already held this but had not established the date) Swap Shop 07/01/78 (Blake's 7 extract - being shown at Missing Believed Wiped next month) Tiswas 05/01/1980 (11 minute extract including ad breaks)
Many dozens of short and long news broadcasts from the late 70s & 80s, not yet checked against BBC or ITN holdings.
Bear in mind that I'm looking mainly for continuity so actual programme finds are a by-product really. 150 more Philips tapes to go through and lots more VHS & Betamax.
