So whats the chance of it going back into the BBC archives? That's probably the big question. Aren't the BBC reluctant to pay for footage to be returned, so will it be reliant on the company holding the footage being willing to return it for free? I don't think the BBC has got any of the German Disco TOTP stuff back in its archives - presumably as ZDF want paying.

what a farce! the BBC should have been sitting on an absolute goldmine of TOTP and various other pop music footage, instead we're left looking for crumbs here and there to be rediscovered
I know video-tape was prohibitively expensive in the '60's and '70's but surely if other countries could manage to preseve their archive like say Germany why did'nt we?
did no-one in authority not take time to think hold on a minute this footage (MUST)be preserved no matter the cost,I'm not talking about entire programmes or series but maybe historic footage akin to say The Beatles on TOTP in 1966 (Hi Shelley!) everybody knew how big they were by 1966 so no excuses

Hi, William ...
Re: the Beatles. I was told back in 1989 by this guy called Dave, who was from Wolverhampton, who presented himself as a Beatles expert, that there was a vault or a safe or some other kind secure storage at the BBC, that contained the very sort of material you mention. Now this guy fancied himself as an insider as far as Beatles "collectibles" went, both as video, vinyl, cd etc. He also used to carry round a briefcase which he'd never let anyone see the contents, so whether or not he really knew anything or was just puffing himself up, I don't know for sure ... but I know what I think.

That's a bugger to sync up! Were they miming or playing live? Either they were playing live or the TOTP turntable was running slightly slow that day!

Are we sure the Black Sabbath clip is missing? It's missing from the BBC, yes - but (happily) not from another European archive. I hope it returns to the BBC as any pristine colour TOTP from 1970 that adds to the paltry amount that already exists there is very welcome. Very nice.

What is the Duster Bennett footage from? The only two appearances I know of are in Supershow (1969) and the Pop2 episode with John Mayall and friends. For the love of god someone please record this and get it on youtube!

Hi Frank
Is there any more detail on the "Hits A Gogo" shows that have already been shown prior to now. Do you know when this latest run of shows started?

Utter, utter rubbish. I worked at the BBC from 1976 to 1989, starting off in the Transcription Service, ending up in VT Current Operations (part of the Film + VT Library) at Television Centre and never heard even a whisper of such a thing. And, as an avid Beatles fan, I was always on the lookout for Beatles stuff and NEVER came across anything at all. ...............I do well remember however, when Bob Pratt dubbed me a 3 hour SVHS of various 'pop' stuff that he had kept, being blown away with the Beatles videos filmed in early 66 (I think) at TVi of all the stuff for Ed Sullivan (Ticket to Ride, Help!, I Feel Fine etc etc)-lovely stuff. I'd never see them before. Oh, that compilation included the 'Revolution' clip wit the live vocal - that blew me away as well! If only it had been fully 'live'.

Hi John,
Don't forget that Duster Bennett was on "Pop Scotch 1970" see my previous thread
Grampian TV: Friday 29th May 1970: 6:30-7:00pm Chicken Shack, John Mayall, Duster Bennett
source: NME
Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that any footage survives
cheers William

Quite, Gary ... we are of the same mind ... I didn't believe it then and I don't now.
The Intertel stuff is incredible ... the various Rains & Paperback Writers as well as the 1965 stuff. The live vocal Revolution is excellent too, with some nice touches mixing elements of the slow and fast versions together ("count me out ... in" and the backing vocals).
